Mom rewarded for thwarting robbery

Nov. 07, 2012 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- Between her classes at Huntington Junior College and raising her 4- and 5-year-old sons, Alison Barry definitely has come to count on her daily McFrappe from her local McDonalds on the corner of 1st Street and 5th Avenue to kickstart her day.

Barry also has come to know most of the employees and regular customers at the restaurant as friends she gets to visit with before she heads out for school, where she is working to become a certified medical coder, so it should have been no surprise when she came to her friends' help on Oct. 23 and chased down a robber, who had just stolen $60 from the restaurant.

However, it was a big surprise for Barry after she realized what she had done that day, and it was an even bigger surprise when she was met by Tom Wolf, the owner of that McDonald's restaurant Tuesday afternoon.

First, there was the presentation of a plaque, which preceded the big news: Wolf told Barry he had paid her tuition at HJC for the next quarter, and he provided her with a $100 gift card to help with her general expenses.

Barry, who already had been given certificates for $20 worth of McFrappes from restaurant management, said there was no way she could have predicted any part of this story would happen to her.

"I didn't expect something like that would happen, and I didn't really expect anything back in return," Barry said. "This is awesome. It's kind of overwhelming because I come here every day, and I think the employees here are what makes the difference. They are good people, and I think I just wanted to help that day."

Wolf said when he heard Barry's heroic story, he knew he had to thank her properly.

"It is a great story about what she did, and it just serves to remind us that we are all in this together," Wolf said. "She really did something to help out this restaurant and the people here, who she refers to as her friends, and she is a friend to us here. It was great to be able to come here and help her in return."
