Day report center receives donations of new supplies

November 21, 2009 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- The Western Regional Day Report Center accepted $37,000 worth of supplies and equipment, giving them more tools to clean up trash and overgrown lots throughout Cabell County.

Christopher Dean, director of the day report center, said donations came from the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection and the community in Cabell County. The state DEP donated a $25,000 dump trailer to be used by work crews in the county.

The new trailer, Dean said, allows crews to directly pickup the collected trash they find on the roads and bring it to a dump in Hurricane, W.Va. Previously, bags of trash would be left by the sides of the roads and picked up at a later time by the DEP.

Dean said the day report center also received $12,000 worth of tools donated by the community. Tools and equipment include lawnmowers, lawn trimmers, brooms, ladders, rakes, hedge trimmers and more.

The equipment will be kept in the day report center's new storage trailer. Dean said equipment used to be carried in the small transport bus that also carried the crew.

The trailer was partially funded by a community improvement grant, he said.

With so much more supplies, Dean said crews are now able to cleanup the community five days a week. A crew is made up of about 10 to 15 nonviolent offenders. These donated items will only be used in Cabell County, Dean said.
