HURRICANE, W.Va. -- The driver of a car that crashed into a bridge on W.Va. 34 Monday morning has died, according to media reports.
The accident was reported to Putnam County 911 dispatchers just after 11 a.m. Monday on W.Va. 34 near the Sycamore Landfill in Hurricane.
The drive died on the scene, according to local media reports. The Hurricane Police Department responded to the accident. Further details were not available.
Jane Johnson, of Hurricane, said she was on her way to the post office with her granddaughter and getting ready to pull on to W.Va. 34 when she saw the blue Chevrolet Cobalt involved in he accident drive past her traveling north.
"He drove right into the concrete bridge," said Johnson. "No stopping. No slowing down. No brakes. On that section of road people drive a little faster than normal, but not this fast."
She said the vehicle flew into the air after striking the bridge and flipped on its top and "exploded" into flames.
She said police told her there was a man in the vehicle.
"That car was engulfed," said Johnson. "There was no getting out of it. It happened in seconds. I was thankful I wasn't out there on the road."
