Cabell schools to talk calendar
HUNTINGTON — The first of two public meetings about the 2014-15 Cabell County Schools calendar will coincide with this week’s regular meeting of the Board of Education.
All members of the public are welcome to attend the meeting that begins at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, at the school system’s central office at 2850 5th Avenue, Huntington.
The public hearings are part of a new requirement that was implemented with education reform legislation on the state level in 2013.
Members of the public will be free to comment during the draft calendar that was one of three calendars developed by a committee of teachers, administrators, parents, students and school officials. Cabell County Schools employees voted for their preferred calendar out of those three, and that calendar became the draft calendar that will be up for consideration during the meetings.
The second public meeting will take place at the regular board meeting on Tuesday, March 4.
In other business, the board will consider three change order requests in regard to work at Huntington East Middle School and the system’s transportation garage.
There are two change order requests for Huntington East. One order is to provide $2,155.23 to replace gas regulators on cooking equipment in the school, and the other request is for $2,426.30 to perform door hardware adjustments. Both of the projects will be paid for through the contingency fund for the school.
The change order request for the transportation garage is a credit of $1,996. The measure on the agenda indicates that the amount of topsoil removed from the Huntington East site to the garage site was less than expected.
In other business, the board will vote on whether to approve a partnership between the school system and Sammons & Adams Orthodontics to provide an opportunity for students in the Health Science Education program at Cabell Midland High School.
The board also will consider a measure to formally request proposals for financial audits of the school system for the 2014, 2015 and 2016 fiscal years.
