Kentucky first lady gives 500 books to Catlettsburg Elementary
CATLETTSBURG, Ky. -- Kentucky first lady Jane Beshear provided about 500 books Thursday to students at Catlettsburg Elementary as part of a summer reading program.
Beshear is encouraging children across Kentucky to read four or more books this summer. She urged the fourth- and fifth-graders to take the books home this summer.
"Reading is the primary vehicle on the road to success," Beshear said. "Students who love reading, love learning are more likely to be engaged in the classrooms. Children who are eager to go to school have higher test scores, stronger retention rates and are more likely to go on to explore post-secondary education. Today we are helping to lay the foundation for a lifelong love of literature."
