HURRICANE -- A benefit will be held for Reba Barnes from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 18 at the John Henson Senior Center in Hurricane.

Barnes, 60, was born with a birth defect that affected her legs. When she was 9 years old, the Shriners provided her first artificial legs. Since then, she has had several replacements, but this time she cannot get help with the cost. Her church and friends have helped her raise about $4,000 with various fundraisers. She still has several thousand to raise.

The benefit includes a hotdog sale, baked goods, an auction at 11:30 a.m. with auctioneer Marshall Call, and a gospel sing. Singers include Forgiven at 1 p.m., Gospel Treasures at 2 p.m., Clarence Lewis at 3 p.m., and Soul Purpose at 4 p.m.

SCOTT DEPOT -- The Teays Valley Self-Help Fibromyalgia Group will host its sixth monthly meeting from 5:30-7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 20, at 301-6 Great Teays Blvd., Scott Depot.

The group is interested in bringing together people who are impacted by this disorder. Dr. Jon Murphy will be the speaker. This event is free and open to the public. Nutritious refreshments will be provided by members of the group.

WINFIELD -- Winfield's General Admission Show Choir is sponsoring a bus trip to New York City to raise money for choir expenses.

Billed as the ultimate Christmas shopping trip, the motorcoach will depart Winfield at about midnight on Friday, Dec. 5, and return about 8 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 7. There up-and-back trip will not include a motel stay.

Travelers will be free to enjoy the city dressed for the season, see the sites, shop or take in a show, all on your own.

HURRICANE -- Dress your poodle like a princess, turn your Spaniel into a spook or make your mutt into a mummy, then parade your pet for a good cause.

The 12th annual Pet Halloween Costume Contest will be held on Sunday, Oct. 26 at Valley Park in Hurricane (near the Wave Pool). Registration begins at 2 p.m.

Categories for the contest are: Scariest, Funniest, Prettiest, Most Original, Pet/Owner Look Alike and Best Former Shelter Pet. There is a $3 entry fee per category.

Bill Shahan will again host the event and there will be a photogragher and great raffle prizes.

The event is co-sponsored by the Putnam County Humane Society and Putnam County Parks and Recreation. All proceeds will benefit the Putnam County Humane Society's spay/neuter and medical funds.

TEAYS VALLEY -- The Putnam County Library will host the annual Halloween Read Aloud at 5:45 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 23 in the lobby of the main library.

This event features the Hurricane High School Read Aloud Club in costume reading their favorite Halloween stories.

Free trick-or-treat bags will be available and the children should come in costume and enjoy an early trick-or-treat.

WINFIELD -- The Cub Scouts of Pack 202 in Winfield will host a pancake breakfast at Applebee's to help fund a great year of scouting.

Tickets will be available at the door at the Teays Valley Applebee's between 8 and 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25.

Tickets are $5 per person. Included in the ticket price is a plate of pancakes with a side (sausage or bacon) and a beverage.

All proceeds will benefit Pack 202, which wishes to thank Applebee's for helping and supporting the pack.

WINFIELD -- Winfield High School's "General Admission" show choir will host its annual Homecoming Spaghetti Dinner on Friday, Oct. 24 prior to their football game that evening.

Serving will start at 4 p.m and end at 7 p.m. Admission to the event is $5 per person.

WINFIELD -- Hunter education classes will be offered later this month in Putnam County.

The 10-hour class is required by all persons born after Dec. 31, 1974 who wish to purchase a hunting license or stamps in West Virginia. The classes are free, but the seating is limited. All must pre-register to attend.

The local class will be held from 6-9:30 p.m. Oct. 28, 29 and 30 at Teays Valley Center.

BUFFALO, W.Va. -- Toyota Motor Manufacturing Inc. will host the next Putnam County Chamber Business After Hours.

The event is planned for 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23 at the Toyota plant. Guests may choose to tour the plant or attend a presentation on Toyota's training and development program called "Skill Up."

Tours and Presentations last approximately 20 minutes. Times available are 5, 5:20, 5:40 and 6:40.

Business After Hours is designed as a premier networking event for members of the business community. This event provides a professional venue for business owners and their employees to make new contacts and increase their client base. It is open to Chamber members and their guests.

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Thomas Memorial Hospital's Diabetes Educator, Richard McGinnis, will host free grocery store tours on Wednesday, Nov. 12 at 9 a.m. and again at 11 a.m. at the Kroger's in Dunbar Village.

These tours will educate people regarding the nutritional information and how best to shop for your health.

HUNTINGTON -- Artists are invited to enter works into the 8th Annual National Miniature exhibition sponsored by The Renaissance Art Gallery of Huntington.

The gallery will accept submissions from area artists starting this Saturday, Oct. 18 from 12-4 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 19, from 1-4 p.m.

The exhibition will open Nov. 1 with the opening reception for all artists and the public on Sunday, Nov. 2. The show runs through the end of November.

This exhibition is open to all area artists 18 years and older. All media except works reproduced on copiers will be accepted. Only limit is to size.

HURRICANE -- There will be one more opportunity this weekend to sign up players for the Hurricane Amateur Basketball League's 2008-'09 season.

Sign-ups will be held from 9 a.m.-noon on Saturday, Oct. 18 at the Hurricane Middle School Gym.

The registration fee is $70 for one child and $50 for each sibling. Sign-ups after Oct. 18 will require an additional $25 late fee.

The league offers teams for children in kindergarten through ninth grade.

Player evaluations will take place on Oct. 25, at a time to be announced.

Winfield show choir to host craft show Nov. 15

WINFIELD -- The Winfield High School General Admission Show Choir will sponsor a Craft Show from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 15 at the high school.

There will be lots of advertising on T.V., radio, newspapers, Internet, signs and 60-plus show choir members passing out flyers, so turnout is expected to be good.

A 12-by-8-foot space can be rented by crafters for $20. Larger areas may be available for an additional fee.

Putnam schools to host first B.R.I.D.G.E. meeting

WINFIELD -- Putnam County Schools invite parents, teachers, school administrators, and community members who have an interest in the educational needs of English language learners to attend the first meeting of the B.R.I.D.G.E. (Bringing Resources and Ideas to Develop Great English Language Learners) Group.

The school system is working to create effective parent involvement and support partnerships between the schools, parents, and the community. Everyone's effort is needed to meet the needs of the county's increasingly diverse population.

Eleanor Town March for Babies set for Oct. 25

BUFFALO -- Area residents are invited to stand up and march for babies on Saturday, Oct. 25, when Buffalo High School's Future Business Leaders of America club, in conjunction with the March of Dimes, will sponsor the Eleanor Town March for Babies.

The two-mile walk will begin at 1 p.m. at the Eleanor Public Library. Registration will begin at noon in front of the library for anyone who would like to sign up on the day of the walk.

Eleanor Arts & Crafts Show set for Nov. 1

ELEANOR -- The Eleanor Arts & Crafts Show is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, above the Eleanor Fire Department.

Along with a variety of crafts, lunch will also be available for sale. The menu includes soups, hot dogs and baked goods.

WINFIELD -- The Winfield High School General Admission Show Choir has organized a paintball tournament to help raise funds for choir expenses.

Poca High show choir sponsoring basket bingo

POCA -- Poca High School's show choir, Visual Volume, will be sponsor a Longaberger Basket Bingo on Sat., Nov. 1, at the school.

Doors will open at 5 p.m. with the games starting at 6 p.m. All prize baskets will be worth at least $50, and all baskets come with protectors.

The $20 entrance fee buys 16 games, plus four optional bonus games for specialty baskets. Concessions will also be served.

Putnam parks to host haunted house in Oct.

ELEANOR -- You won't need an overnight bag -- but maybe a change of pants -- when you visit Putnam County's newest accommodations. Guests who dare are invited to "check in" to the Slaughter Hotel, where the frightening and unexpected are bound to happen.

The haunted house, presented by Putnam County Parks & Recreation, will be open from 7 to 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, Oct. 17, 18, 24 and 25, and 7 to 10 p.m. on Halloween, Friday, Oct. 31. It is located at County Park Fairgrounds in Eleanor.

ST. ALBANS -- A designer products Bingo event to benefit the Putnam County Humane Society will be held on Saturday, Oct. 18, at the St. Albans Moose.

Bingo games will be held for Longaberger Baskets and Vera Bradley products. There will also be raffle and door prizes, including Silpada Jewelry.

Longaberger Boo Feast benefits cancer society

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- An October event is planned to "scare up" some money for the American Cancer Society.

A Longaberger Boo Feast Tour will leave Putnam County on Oct. 25 and head to Longaberger country. Participants will have lunch at Tami Longaberger's house, get a Longaberger basket, transportation on a deluxe motor coach, breakfast, snacks, a goodie bag, games, door prizes and more for $110, which is non-refundable.

Participants also will go to the Longaberger Factory Store, Homestead, Woven Connections, as well as Dresden for additional shopping.

Community center offers yoga classes

HURRICANE -- Vinyasa Yoga classes began Sept. 8 at the Hurricane Valley Community Center in Valley Park.

Vinyasa Yoga is a physical form of yoga that flows with the breath, according to a press release. The class combines strengthening and toning poses with stretching and relaxing poses.

Classes will be held from 6:45 to 8 p.m. Wednesday nights through Nov. 19.

The Community Center will also offer Isshinryu Karate classes for ages 5 to adult, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Cost is $35 per month.

Annual business expo planned for Nov. 13

HURRICANE -- The Putnam County Chamber of Commerce Annual Business Expo & Business After Hours is scheduled for 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, at the Hurricane Community Center.

The Business Expo is free to the public from 3 to 5 p.m. It will offer information from area businesses.

Putnam County Chamber members are encouraged to register now to exhibit their business services at the Expo. The fee for exhibitors is $125 and includes a 6-foot display table with linens and admission for two representatives to attend the Business After Hours. This event is being sponsored by AT&T.

The Business After Hours, from 5 to 7 p.m., will provide a social opportunity for Chamber members and their guests to network and exchange business cards. The cost to attend is $10 per person, payable at the door or by pre-payment to the Chamber.
