ELEANOR -- You won't need an overnight bag -- but maybe a change of pants -- when you visit Putnam County's newest accommodations. Guests who dare are invited to "check in" to the Slaughter Hotel, where the frightening and unexpected are bound to happen.
The haunted house, presented by Putnam County Parks & Recreation, will be open from 7-11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, Oct. 17, 18, 24 and 25, and 7-10 p.m. on Halloween, Friday, Oct. 31. It is located at County Park Fairgrounds in Eleanor.

FAIRLEA, W.Va. -- Hurricane, Nitro and St. Albans will join eight other high schools in the annual Greenbrier Valley Shrine Marching Classic and the WV Tournament of Bands State Championship this Saturday, Sept. 27 in the Lewisburg/Fairlea area.
The Greenbrier Valley Shrine Parade begins at 4 p.m. in downtown Lewisburg with the field show competition beginning at 5:45 p.m. in Spartan Stadium on the Greenbrier East High School campus in Fairlea, just south of Lewisburg.
Admission to the field competition is $8 adults and $5 for students/senior citizens with the stadium providing a full concession area.
Spartan Stadium is located south of Lewisburg in Fairlea on U.S. 219 South on the campus of Greenbrier East High School, just south of the State Fair of WV.

Crafters wanted for school event
HURRICANE -- West Teays Elementary School in Hurricane is looking for crafters for its 8th annual PTO Craft Fair, planned for 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6.
Crafters can reserve a 10x8-foot space for $25. Set up is available from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 5.
Admission to the craft fair is free to the public.

RED HOUSE, W.Va. -- A Fall Carnival will be offered on Saturday, Oct. 4 at Confidence Elementary School, located on Route 34 in Red House. The carnival is sponsored by the Confidence PTO.
Carnival games and concessions will be available from 1-5 p.m. At 5:30 p.m., several items, including class themed baskets (such as a High School Musical basket and bath & body basket) will be auctioned.

WINFIELD -- The Winfield High School Baseball Boosters will sponsor a rummage sale on Saturday, Oct. 4 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the high school. Concessions will be available.

TEAYS VALLEY -- An official ribbon cutting is planned for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1 at the new Moses Factory Outlet Teays Valley, located next to the Liberty Square shopping plaza.

TEAYS VALLEY -- Putnam County Schools developmental screenings will be held on Friday, Oct. 10, at the Teays Valley Presbyterian Church, Teays Valley Road.
Children ages 2 1/2 to 4 will be screened in the areas of speech/language, hearing, vision, motor skills, social skills, self-help and cognition.

St. ALBANS -- A designer products Bingo event to benefit the Putnam County Humane Society will be held on Saturday, Oct. 18 at the St. Albans Moose.
Doors open at 4 p.m. and games begin at 5 p.m.
Bingo games will be held for Longaberger Baskets and Vera Bradley products. There will also be raffle and door prizes, including Silpada Jewelry.
Cost is $20 for 20 games in advance, or $25 for 20 games at the door. Refreshments will be available.

Teays Valley Newcomers and Neighbors Club plans October meeting
HURRICANE -- Those who are new to the area and would like to meet some neighbors and learn how to join in group activities are invited to a monthly luncheon meeting of the Teays Valley Newcomers and Neighbors Club.
The next monthly meeting will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at Sleepy Hollow Golf Club. Social time starts at 10 a.m. This month will feature a Southwestern Halloween contest. You are invited to dress up in a Southwestern costume or just come as you are. Special guest speaker will be Donnel Horn from the Huntington Museum of Art.
Lunch will feature grilled chicken breast, salsa with black beans, flat bread, flan for dessert and drinks. The cost is $20.

HURRICANE -- The next Putnam County Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours event will be 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30 at City National Bank's new branch location at 39 Raymond Peak Drive, Hurricane.
Business After Hours is designed as a networking event for members of the business community. This event provides a professional venue for business owners and their employees to make new contacts and increase their client base. It is open to Chamber members and their guests.
The Chase-sponsored drawing is valued at $900, and members must be present to win.

HURRICANE -- The Putnam County Convention and Visitors Bureau is compiling the 2009 Putnam County Calendar of Events.

TEAYS VALLEY -- Two days remain of the Putnam County Library's book sale.
It continues today and tomorrow in meeting room B at the Main Library on Route 34.
Business Expo planned in November
HURRICANE -- The Putnam County Chamber of Commerce Annual Business Expo & Business After Hours is scheduled for 3-7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, at the Hurricane Community Center.
The Business Expo is free to the public from 3-5 p.m. It will offer information from area businesses.
Putnam County Chamber members are encouraged to register now to exhibit their business services at the Expo. The fee for exhibitors is $125 and includes a 6-foot display table with linens and admission for two representatives to attend the Business After Hours. This event is being sponsored by AT&T.
The Business After Hours, from 5-7 p.m., will provide a social opportunity for Chamber members and their guests to network and exchange business cards. The cost to attend is $10 per person, payable at the door or by pre-payment to the Chamber.

Longaberger Boo Feast benefits Cancer Society
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- An October event is planned to "scare up" some money for the American Cancer Society.
A Longaberger Boo Feast Tour will leave Putnam County on Oct. 25 and head to Longaberger country. Participants will have lunch at Tami Longaberger's house, get a Longaberger basket, transportation on a deluxe motor coach, breakfast, snacks, a goodie bag, games, door prizes and more for $110, which is non-refundable.
Participants also will go to the Longaberger Factory Store, Homestead, Woven Connections, as well as Dresden for additional shopping.

HURRICANE -- Vinyasa Yoga classes began Sept. 8 at the Hurricane Valley Community Center in Valley Park.
Vinyasa Yoga is a physical form of yoga that flows with the breath, according to a press release. The class combines strengthening and toning poses with stretching and relaxing poses.
Classes will be held from 6:45-8 p.m. Wednesday nights through Nov. 19.
The Community Center will also offer Isshinryu Karate classes for ages 5 to adult, from 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Cost is $35 per month.

WINFIELD -- Feel like you're part of history and learn a little about the "olden days" of Putnam County by attending the living history drama, "Mary Ingles on the Virginia Frontier" and Encampment 2008.
The event will be held Sept. 27-28 at the Weiford Settlement in Winfield..
The one-mile drama presentation of the living history of Mary Ingles on the Virginia Frontier will take place on a trail, where hikers will meet characters from the 1750s-1780s time period. Encampment 2008 will feature daily living and exhibits by artisans and craftsmen of the area.

HURRICANE -- Crafters are invited to share their wares at a craft show hosted by Putnam County Parks & Recreation and the Hurricane Valley Community Center on Saturday, Oct. 4.
The show will be from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Hurricane Valley Community Center by the Wave Pool.
Each vendor can reserve a 10-by-8-foot space with a 72-inch round table and two chairs for $15. Outdoor spaces are also available for $10. There will be no electric hook-ups, and reservations are not refundable. Space is limited.
Vendors can set up from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 3.

Amos Plant to sponsor St. Jude Golf Outing
HURRICANE -- Appalachian Power's John E. Amos Plant will sponsor its second annual "Drive For a Cure" golf tournament to benefit St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital on Sept. 29 at Sleepy Hollow Golf Club.
In an effort to raise awareness of childhood cancer and other catastrophic diseases, each hole at the event will be in honor of, or in memory of a St. Jude patient, most of whom are West Virginians.
There will be various contests and prizes including a chance to win $10,000. There will also be a post-tournament buffet, raffles, silent auction and awards.
