Board to approve drug testing service
HUNTINGTON -- The Cabell County School Board is expected to approve SPORT SAFE Testing Service to conduct the drug tests for the county's new student drug testing policy.
SPORT SAFE Testing Service's bid of $27 per test was slightly lower than those of OccuMed ($30 per test) and Health Research Systems ($29.50 per test). SPORT SAFE is based out of Powell, Ohio.
The company will have a person on site when drug testing takes place. The dates will be kept confidential, but likely one day per week at each school, said Todd Alexander, administrative assistant over secondary schools.
The agenda for Tuesday night's 7:30 meeting at the board office, 2850 5th Ave., Huntington, also includes numerous construction change orders, mostly for the Southside Elementary/ Huntington Middle School campus. The changes include about $83,000 for extra labor, materials and equipment to demolish and remove existing slabs in five areas of the front of the school, which was left behind to be built onto the new school. The change orders also are needed for termite treatment, welded wire fabric and concrete floor. The county also is receiving a credit of $12,760.
The agenda also includes the appointment of two board members to serve on the site selection committee for the proposed Beverly Hills and Enslow middle schools project.
Although the formation of the committee may lead some community members to think consolidation is a foregone conclusion, Alexander said they want to take the steps necessary to be prepared if the board does vote to consolidate.
"I think it's just part of the steps," he said. "There is no consolidation unless the board of education votes to do so. If we didn't do the preliminary work, we would be prepared to deal with the situation when the time comes."
