HUNTINGTON—A bridge dedication ceremony and luncheon is slated for Sgt. Jackie L. Waymire at noon today at the Trinity Church of God's Fellowship Hall at the corner of 27th Street and 3rd Ave. in Huntington.
According to a House of Delegates resolution passed this session, Waymire was killed in Vietnam on Jan. 9, 1967, when his base camp came under automatic weapons fire from a reinforced Viet Cong platoon. Waymire led his platoon on an assault against the insurgent flank and killed three insurgents before he was fatally wounded, the resolution said.
Waymire was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for heroism for service between Jan. 4 and March 18, 1966 and the Distinguished Service Cross, the second highest military decoration of the United States Army, for his “exceptionally valorous actions” on the day he was killed.
