Dean of OU Southern to step down on July 1

Jun. 24, 2013 @ 11:30 PM

IRONTON -- Bill Willan is leaving as dean of Ohio University Southern to take another position in the Ohio University system. Replacing him on an interim basis will be Dan Evans, a former Southern campus dean, while a nationwide search is conducted for a permanent replacement.

In his new position as executive dean for Regional Higher Education for Ohio University, Willan will have administrative oversight over five regional campuses and the Pickerington, Proctorville and Cambridge centers, according to a news release.

Willan has served as dean at the Southern campus in Ironton and the campus's Proctorville Center for five years. He succeeded Evans, an Ironton resident, in that job.

"I'm very pleased Dan Evans has agreed to help out," Willan said Monday. "The campus is in great hands. The campus will continue to move forward with him."

"I'm excited about coming back as dean," Evans said. "I love Ohio University Southern. The campus means a lot to the region and the students."

The personnel changes are effective Monday, July 1.

A committee of faculty members at Ohio University Southern will lead the search for a new dean, Evans said. The committee likely won't be named until the fall semester starts Aug. 24. The job likely will be posted for about 30 days and then several candidates will be brought into Ironton for interviews.

"Bill has made many contributions to the success of our regional campuses over the course of the years he has been a member of the Ohio University community," said Pam Benoit, the university's executive vice president and provost. "He is a talented teacher and administrator who is dedicated to helping students, faculty and staff be successful. The university is fortunate in being able to call on Bill to serve in this important role."

"I am grateful that Dan is willing to serve as interim dean," Benoit said. "It is one of many times that he has agreed to fill an important leadership position at Ohio University. Dan's dedication to Southern, to the regional campuses and the university is unparalleled."

Willan said his five years at the Southern campus has been "a wonderful experience with dedicated and hard-working people who have made the job a joy."

"A lot has been accomplished," Willan said. He cited the new entrance to the Ironton campus and new degree programs and current renovations at the Riffe Center.

In addition to being dean, Willan is an associate professor of English. He has a doctorate and master's in English from Purdue University and a bachelor of arts from the University of Indianapolis.

Other responsibilities for Willan in his new job include coordinating relationships between the regional campuses and the main campus in Athens, overseeing the finances for regional higher education and promoting the access and outreach mission of the university.
