Huntington should look to other cities

In response to the editorial concerning increased violence at bars in downtown Huntington, it occurred to me that perhaps the city may find a solution to this problem by contacting other cities that had similar problems and found an amicable solution.

Talk radio posing as entertainment

Talk radio is changing its face from conservative speech to entertainment.

To beat the threat of Congress revisiting the fairness doctrine, which guarantees a rebuttal to their rhetoric, they have changed and are presenting themselves as entertainers. Talk radio has created Baffoonism. Take a sentence out of a speech or sermon, repeating it over and over to their cult-like audience, hoping they will believe it.

Talk radio people aren't the sanctimonious, holier-than-thou angels they pretend to be. Talk radio personalities want to say anything they want to say but don't want to be held accountable if it's half truths.

Hannity, Limbaugh, Beck and Savage, who represent talk radio, have sold their souls and the soul of the conservative party to the devil for a few pieces of silver. It's no more about a great conservative movement. It's all about money. They have become comedians to protect their hind ends for abusing freedom of speech with their provocative opinions.

Don't buy puppies born in mills

In silence they suffer, bearing litter after litter in tiny wire cages exposed to extreme elements. If they become sick, too bad. As soon as the babies are old enough, they are sold to pet stores where they are sold to un-wary buyers who don't know what a miserable beginning these puppies have suffered.

Most have inherent health and mental problems.

Be aware that people mass produce these puppies and are large suppliers to pet stores. They consider dogs "livestock." If stores would stop buying from them, it would shut down the mills.

Meanwhile, back at the farm, the mother has been bred every season until she can no longer produce, and is inhumanely killed or left to suffer and die on her own.

Barge facilities don't care about people

I read a letter about the barges that said it depends on the businesses of the United States. Well I stand for the United States, but I'm sorry, it takes the people first to run a country and our American people number is fading all the time. One clean spot on the river won't make a difference, but it's the only one there.

So you see how the business people think, it's more important than the people.

Most of the barges never move, just sit, collect trash and bang together. Rust falls into the water and pollutes that and once again, the people they care nothing about, end up with the trash in their laps. If they would look at all the other things besides recreation, like life itself, with no life there is no USA anyway. Look, learn and listen to your young people. We're losing enough with war and drugs. Let the ones live that can live. Clean up our rivers instead of ruining them.

I love to look at the river when it's calm and clean.

Reader looks for memories of school

December 01, 2008 @ 08:20 PM

I can still see it as I climb the ridge at the south end of Johnstown Road. And those who turn onto West Virginia 527 from Miller Road and Pleasant Valley Drive can see it, too. That is, if they attended the little red brick school that made its home in the valley where Interstate 64 now runs east and west. It sat in the middle of a vast green meadow. Johnstown Road ran past it, almost at its door, and there was a lazy little creek on the north side of the dirt playground where we spent many a recess. We played marbles in the dust. We played ball and jacks and all the things that can be done in 15 minutes worth of free time. We developed lifelong relationships there, and our teachers taught us so many things. What a wonderful place Pleasant Valley Elementary School was. The interstate took it years ago, but my mind's eye still sees it from the hill.
