Drug addictions will ruin society

Our society is traveling at breakneck speed down a dark and deadly road in a pimped-out vehicle called drug addiction.

I recently attended an informative seminar on addiction. We discovered that among our 25 or so members of the class, each of us had been affected in some manner by this flesh-eating, mind-ruining, job-losing, family-destroying disease called drug addiction.

Celebrities glamorize drug use. Media follow the fashionable and famous giving every detail of those who have checked into Betty Ford. This infectious disease crosses every socioeconomic and educational boundary.

Daily newspaper articles report drug-related crimes: Shoplifting, home invasion, prostitution, child neglect, bank robbery and murder.

The Associated Press reports that even the fish are suffering. "Minuscule amounts of medicines in rivers and streams can alter the biology and behavior of fish and other marine animals." (Journal of Science)

Continuing, the article states, "Calling their results alarming, the Swedish researchers who did the study suspect the little drugged fish could become easier targets for bigger fish because they are more likely to venture alone into unfamiliar waters." This not only applies to the little fish in the waters, but the "little fish" on our playgrounds and in our neighborhoods who are being subjected to the familiarity of drug use and have indeed become easy targets for dealers.

Two states have legalized the use of marijuana as a medicinal drug. Many have advocated the use of marijuana is but a stepping stone to more addictive and dangerous drugs.

What will destroy us? Our civilization? What will bring us down? Terrorists? Financial collapse? Natural disasters? Possibly. The disease of drug addiction is a sure road to a place called destruction.
