Bikes have equal rights as cars

Recently there have been a series of letters in The Herald-Dispatch regarding bicycling on public roadways and sidewalks. In one letter, the author stated his opinion that bicycles should not have equal rights to those of cars.

I feel it is the responsibility of The Herald-Dispatch to make clear that, regardless of this person's opinion, by law, bicycles do in fact have equal rights to those of cars on West Virginia (and Ohio and Kentucky) roads and streets. To not do so is misleading to readers and makes for potentially dangerous situations for drivers of cars and bicycles alike.

It also true that, as stated in a more recent letter, bicycles are not allowed on sidewalks, at least in Huntington.

Thanks for your service, J. Allen

Army Ranger Justin Bradley Allen of Coal Grove, Ohio, was killed in Afghanistan. Thank you, sir, for your service to our country. And the freedom that my family and I have.

It is fine young men like you who have kept our great nation FREE. While I did not know Ranger Allen, a have a son-in-law that did two tours with the U.S. Marines in Iraq.

My prayers go out to the Allen family. So sorry for your loss. Rest in peace, Ranger Justin Bradley Allen.

Tax unfair to the middle class

Trust me, things are tough all over. Is this new Huntington tax plan going to hurt me financially? You better believe it.

What hurts even worse is knowing I will have to shell out half the tax my boss will have to pay even though he makes over $400,000 annually! Cap it at $1,250? Sure, why not? As long as the wealthy and influential people of this city aren't overburdened with taxation, who cares about the working middle class? Not you, not right now. But it may be a different story come election time.

I rest my case.
