Barge facility has too many negatives

It would bother me greatly if I did not write this letter to oppose the Huntington Marine Services barge facility again. With all the other issues that we are pre-occupied with, such as the presidential election, gas prices and the economy, Burlington and Westmoreland don’t need up to 200 barges parked along the banks of their communities.

This proposed barge facility would create safety issues and congestion with the current flow of barges and pleasure boats. It could create possible damage to the man-made floodwall on the West Virginia side.

As the river rises during the winter and spring, and if one or more barges break loose against the bank, it could endanger a lot of families in Westmoreland.

The Huntington Marine barge facility would create a lot of negative issues. Just to mention a few: noise, pollution and creating an eyesore along the bedroom communities of Westmoreland and Burlington.

U.S. doesn’t need Obama’s change

Dark and uncertain clouds loom on the horizon as the Barack Obama and Democratic bandwagon gain overwhelming momentum. His theme of “change” brings chills down my spine, to be honest, while others, including senators and congressmen, rush as lemmings to an unknown political and social destiny, supporting him blindly.

Do you know that he proposes increasing taxes on oil, gas and coal? He is saying that producers and consumers will leave a smaller carbon footprint, and if you don’t comply, you will pay the price. (No oil drilling, please). This action will tear West Virginia and its citizens asunder. The Democrats want to nationalize the oil companies and refineries now — yea, Hugo Chavez!

The Democrats, lead by Diane Feinstein, D-Calif., also want to apply the Fairness Doctrine to talk radio. The printed and electronic media, as well as Hollywood and the entertainment industry, are already controlled by the extreme left that idolizes Obama, and now they are upset because of some opposition to their liberal program by talk radio.

I don’t like John McCain, but America had better wake up. Electing Obama is a dangerous thing. I don’t fault him for previously not wearing an American flag lapel, but a man who stated “What are there, 57 states?” needs deep scrutinizing.

City losing historic 3rd Avenue homes

As I drive down 3rd Avenue and see the vacant lot where a beautiful historic house once was, I become very angry. I cannot comprehend how a person or group of people can destroy a piece of history.

But along with the anger, I become concerned about what this destruction says about Huntington. Third Avenue is one of the main gateways to downtown Huntington and contributes to a person’s image of Huntington. Unfortunately, the tree-lined avenue of historic family homes is being changed to concrete and asphalt. This change has the potential to not only hurt Huntington esthetically, but also financially.

My personal options to stop this change are few. One option to try to stop the progression of the destruction is writing this letter and working with the neighborhood organization. Another option I have is to leave. I can simply move to another location.

Unfortunately, the concrete and asphalt will stay as part of Huntington. So, I guess the city needs to decide what one of the first impressions of Huntington will be. Will we preserve the tree-lined avenue with historic family homes, or will we destroy the homes and have tree lined concrete and asphalt?
