Panhandling kids in street is dangerous
I am deeply concerned. Lately I've noticed every Friday after work that parents are putting their children in the middle of busy intersections to beg for money.
It's not the fact that they are teaching their children to beg, and not work, for their money. It's simply the fact that this is extremely dangerous.
I live in Wayne County at the intersection where 152 meets 75 in Lavalette. There have been five or six children there for the past three weeks -- right at 5 o'clock rush hour traffic. I think this is irresponsible.
What if an ambulance had to go through that turning lane in an emergency? They may not see small children in the middle of the road until it's too late. People die in wrecks on my road all the time.
I also wonder, under whose authority are these people out there? Are the state police aware that people are standing out in the middle of the road impeding the flow of traffic? I fear that one day we'll be reading about this in the newspaper again -- only it will be front page news when one of the children gets hit, or worse.

Program can help parents fight drugs
There's a new reality for our kids today, one that we as parents would never have thought probable. How we respond to that reality affects not only our children, but their children.
The disturbing truth is that many parents whose children have used or are using drugs hide their heads in the sand until their child's habit, their addiction, no longer allows them the comfort of denial. Inevitably, there's a point in our child's life where they will have to make a decision to try or not try drugs. The voice most listened to in that decision is that of their parents. Although parents cannot stop their children from trying tobacco, alcohol or drugs, they can be more effective at positively influencing the child's choices.
How to Drug Proof Your Kids, a program of Focus on the Family, will be facilitated by Pastor Jim Varney of ENOUGH at Heritage Free Will Baptist in Boyd County Friday, Sept. 18, and Saturday, Sept. 19. Call 606-928-4036 for more information or e-mail rterry.eclipse@live.com.
The lure is strong and the effects devastating for those unprepared to handle their child's reality. Go to www.drugproofyourkids.events.live.com for more details or to sign up.
