Why is plentiful water so expensive?

I sent a friend this question:

My water bill in Lavalette (water only, no sewage or garbage) is about $32 a month. How does that compare with Tucson, Ariz.? I use about 1,300 gallons a month.

My friend replied: The total bill for garbage pickup, sewage and water for the two of us breaks down like this: Garbage pick-up is $14, sewage is $18.57, and water is $14.69 for 4,488 gallons. We use more water for our plants and trees outside when it's 110 degrees.

My friends use about 31/2 times more water in the desert but pay less than half what I do here in a water-rich area. Why? How do these figures compare with your usage?

I think it's time our water officials answered some questions.

Sen. Byrd a great man, politician

Senator Byrd, a great American.

The recent outlandish attack against this great American and very distinguished member of the United States Senate from our great state is enough to make one nauseated. No man could have done more than this man. He is older, but he is still effective. When he is gone from us, a new man will be elected. But no one can ever replace him.

Also, the dedication and effectiveness of Ted Kennedy is worthy of merit. His state has sent him to the Senate since 1964. We should pray for him and thank him for all he has done. Remember, the party of Roosevelt, Truman, Kennedy, Carter and Clinton has made the USA a better place to live.

Law must ensure children's rights

Our system needs an overhaul in many departments, including the protection of children's rights. There are few rights for a child below kindergarten age to get disability education or mental or emotional evaluation or treatment if the parent or guardian chooses not to.

We must fight for advocacy for these children so that if evaluated with a treatable problem they have the opportunity to reach their fullest potential when intervention is done at the earliest possible age.

The law must be changed to ensure rights of all children regardless of age to testing, evaluation and treatment for disabilities.
