Election columns/letters guidelines

September 04, 2008 @ 12:00 AM

With the general election quickly approaching, The Herald-Dispatch would like to detail our guidelines for people wishing to write election-related pieces for publication on the opinion pages.

For candidates

  • Candidate for political office may submit only one guest column. The column may be no longer than 500 words as counted by our computer system. The deadline for such columns is noon on Sept. 15.
  • We will not accept column-length pieces written by another person on behalf of a candidate.
  • For Voice of the People

  • Letters for Voice of the People endorsing or criticizing candidates or political parties must be no longer than 200 words. Election letters must be received by noon Friday, Oct. 24.
  • If the volume of letters is very large, some may be published only at www.herald-dispatch.com rather than in the print newspaper.
  • Letters will be chosen for publication in The Herald-Dispatch based on topic, length and fairness. To have a better chance of publication, a letter should set forth original or unique information or arguments. Letters that appear to have been copied and pasted from a campaign site will not be considered. Priority will be given to residents of the Tri-State area.
  • As usual, we reserve the right to accept or reject any letter or column for publication.

Anyone with questions may contact Jim Ross, editorial page editor, at 304-526-2803 or jimross@herald-dispatch.com.
