Why would W.Va. vote for Republican?

As the election cycle enters its last few months, polls show that West Virginians will be voting again for the Republican candidate. This prompts me to ask, "What's wrong with West Virginians?"

Before we do that again, it's appropriate to pause and look at what it got us. George Bush and the Republican Party took the strongest economy in the world and ran it into a ditch, implemented a war that when finished will cost our country at least $3 trillion, squandered our national reputation and prestige, gave millions of dollars in tax breaks to oil companies, millions more in tax breaks to the rich, rewarded industries that ship jobs overseas, vetoed health insurance for indigent children, consistently vetoed an increase in the minimum wage and gave us an energy policy that has resulted in astronomical gas prices.

Can anyone argue that West Virginians are better off than before?

Now West Virginians stand ready to vote for John McCain, a man who has supported the above policies 95 percent of the time. As Hillary Clinton put it, "We don't need four more years of the last eight years."

So again I ask, "What's wrong with West Virginians?" Are they stupid?

Don't legalize fireworks in state

I am writing this in response to what I heard on my local news channel on Aug. 19.

There was a statement made about West Virginia legalizing fireworks because everyone is buying fireworks in Kentucky and Ohio anyway. There was a chemist on the show, and he stated how the injuries had gone down. Well, in my area, they have and that awful noise and gun smoke odor has, too. They have already legalized table games, that, no doubt, will gobble up the small paychecks of many West Virginians.

Please, whoever had this idea, please think it over. We don't need legalized fireworks. What's next, legalized dynamite fishing?

Show some respect at funeral, cemetery

You know it's a sad day when you can't even bury a loved one without some people trying to start trouble at the funeral home or grave site. They just don't have any respect at all for the dead.

But I know our beloved brother was laughing at them from heaven. You people know who I am talking about.

This is to you, Richard. We love and miss you very much.

Reader looks for memories of school

I can still see it as I climb the ridge at the south end of Johnstown Road. And those who turn onto West Virginia 527 from Miller Road and Pleasant Valley Drive can see it, too. That is, if they attended the little red brick school that made its home in the valley where Interstate 64 now runs east and west. It sat in the middle of a vast green meadow. Johnstown Road ran past it, almost at its door, and there was a lazy little creek on the north side of the dirt playground where we spent many a recess. We played marbles in the dust. We played ball and jacks and all the things that can be done in 15 minutes worth of free time. We developed lifelong relationships there, and our teachers taught us so many things. What a wonderful place Pleasant Valley Elementary School was. The interstate took it years ago, but my mind's eye still sees it from the hill.
