Sheriff must work to help Burlington

Concerned citizens of Burlington, we must come together and ask Sheriff Tim Sexton what he intends to do about providing police protection in our area. Things have gotten so bad that we can no longer feel secure in our homes. Property crimes are rampant, drugs are everywhere, and we even pay higher prices at our local discount store because of the huge amount of shoplifting that takes place there. In short, Burlington is easy because we have no police protection.

What we need to do is get on our phones, call the sheriff and ask him what he intends to do about this outrage. If enough of us call, he will have to start listening to us. Tell him we need the protection he promised us when he was running for office.

Tell him openly that if he can't take back our streets, we can and will. After all, the way things are now, we don't have to worry about police interference.

NAFTA is hurting our economy

The NAFTA conspiracy is a plan brought together secretly. The North Atlantic Free Trade Agreement is just such a plan.

Millions in the United States have lost their good-paying jobs to foreign countries that are getting rich at our expense. Homes are lost because people can no longer afford the payments. Senior citizens have lost their retirement and medical benefits because of the New World Order, and our leaders supporting them.

Our prices keep going up because we are importing more than we are exporting, and we suffer because our government regulations do not affect them.

China was able to develop its missile guidance system because of the GATT treaty. I worked for such an international company in Huntington, and as a retiree, I lost more than $6,000 a year in medical benefits while illegal immigrants get them free.

Stop buying dogs from puppy mills

This letter is to bring awareness to people about puppy mills. Anyone who watched the video of the dogs and puppies being removed by the Humane Society got a good dose of the reality.

Many animals suffer so needlessly so that people can buy the latest, greatest breed craze, whether it be a "full-bred dog" or a "designer mutt."

The mothers of the puppies that are sold live in small crates and are never thought of until they are ready to breed again. There are some reputable breeders who do it right. Please think before you put down your money to "buy" a pet. If people were not buying dogs, these people would be out of business.

So many of these "bought" pets end up in rescue, Little Victories or the local animal shelter. It is time to become more "humane" to the animals, to adopt the unwanted, to spay and neuter.

Reader looks for memories of school

December 01, 2008 @ 08:20 PM

I can still see it as I climb the ridge at the south end of Johnstown Road. And those who turn onto West Virginia 527 from Miller Road and Pleasant Valley Drive can see it, too. That is, if they attended the little red brick school that made its home in the valley where Interstate 64 now runs east and west. It sat in the middle of a vast green meadow. Johnstown Road ran past it, almost at its door, and there was a lazy little creek on the north side of the dirt playground where we spent many a recess. We played marbles in the dust. We played ball and jacks and all the things that can be done in 15 minutes worth of free time. We developed lifelong relationships there, and our teachers taught us so many things. What a wonderful place Pleasant Valley Elementary School was. The interstate took it years ago, but my mind's eye still sees it from the hill.
