Yearlong calendar would help students
I just got home from attending my first-ever parent presentation for this proposed balanced school-year calendar, and I had a few concerns going in tonight. But out of about 50 parents ....
1) I was one of the youngest mothers who attended. 2) I didn't hear a single positive attitude or behavior toward what could be positive change in the way our county is headed. 3) I sat for one hour and 45 minutes to listen to parents of my county complain and whine about all the sport and extra-curricular stuff their child would miss out on.
No, let's not look at the positive knowledge they're trying to offer the kids who, like mine, are young and love school and love this idea. Instead let's complain because of all the sport camps and 4-H and fairs they'll be missing by not having three months in the summer.
I like the idea of the structure of having a shorter summer and intersessions through the year because, let's look at reality, do you know many college students or full-time working employees who have the luxury of being off for three months straight? No, you do not.
So why not instill some gesture of reality into them when they're young so when it's time to graduate and start college or working there's not this huge gap of transition and our youth, our future, fails?
Sorry, but I am an outraged mother and parent at the moment. I am sorely disappointed in the parents who did choose to show up and hear the information.
