Courtney Proctor Cross: Tree projects add beauty to Huntington
Hello, my name is Courtney Proctor Cross. I am the chairperson of the Urban Forestry Advisory Committee for the City of Huntington. I am working to coordinate a major tree planting for the city right of way on 13th Avenue from 8th Street to 12th Street.
As you have probably noticed, many trees have been removed over the past 10 years and most have not been replaced. The beautiful oaks that remain are mature and while many may live for another 20 to 30 years, it is likely that some of them will not live much longer. To ensure that the city retains the beautiful tree canopy that distinguishes this part of our city, we need to begin replacing the trees that have been lost to age and disease.
Our plan is to plant 15 oaks and 5 sugar maples large enough to survive on the street scape before winter begins. The delivery, planting and mulching of 20 trees in the available planting spaces will cost approximately $6,000. This work will include a two-year guarantee.
Huntington residents Pam and David Miller and Sterling and Rosalee Hall have committed significant sums of money toward this project. These two couples realize the value trees add to our community.
I hope you will join Pam, David, Sterling and Rosalee in making a contribution that will make it possible for the planting to happen this month. If you are able to help, please send your tax deductible contribution to the Foundation for the Tri-State Community, Inc. Attention: Sandi Martin. The address is P.O. Box 2096 Ashland, KY 41105-2096 . Please note that your donation should be marked "13th Avenue Project." The foundation will send you a letter for tax purposes once your donation has been received.
If you are able to fund a whole tree, the cost of a tree is $300. This amount covers the cost of a two-and-a-half inch caliper tree, as well as the delivery, planting and one year guarantee. If you are not able to fund an entire tree, please know that no amount is too small to be helpful and every contribution will be greatly appreciated.
If we raise more money than we need for this particular area, we will simply extend the planting area around the end of the park on 12th Street.
If you have questions or ideas you would like to share, you may contact me through e-mail or by calling or texting. My email is email@example.com. My cell number is 304-544-5891.
Thank you for considering a contribution to this worthwhile project.
