MU needs new strategy for hiring coaching staff

Marshall University football is still looking for a coach to replace Chris Rippon as defensive coordinator. I implore those involved in the hiring to look at the record of those being considered very carefully, because I don't think they looked at Rippon's at all.

Rippon had two average years at Syracuse, one really good year and his last two were terrible, where teams averaged almost 30 points against the Syracuse defense. So bad that Rippon was relieved as defensive coordinator after 2003. I can only surmise Rippon was hired here because he had been a coach at a larger school.

It was the same reasoning that brought Ron Jirsa to Marshall as head basketball coach in 2003. Gosh, he's been head coach at Georgia! The fact that he was not successful there eluded everyone. Marshall hiring has too often been retreads and good ol' boys. We hire head coaches with no previous head coaching experience and suffer because they have to learn on the job or hire coaches like Jirsa who have shown zero success. We hire coordinators the same way, such as Rippon and Greg Minter, who are very experienced and knowledgeable, but don't have great success on game day.

In this case, we need to look at any defensive coordinator at any level who has shown recent repeated success. We are not going to have a successful football team until we start hiring people who have been successful. The hiring of retread and good ol' boys has to stop. Instead of "we have to win our last two games to be bowl eligible," we need to return to "We play for championships." We won't do that unless we change the way we've hired a lot of our coaches.

Christians should look at the facts

First, let me say I am a Christian and I'm tired of people who think themselves intelligent Christians. Telling everyone in the paper that evolution isn't real, God was just playing a joke on us by leaving a fossil record for all to see. There is no such thing as climate change and if there is, it's God's will because we did something wrong and He is punishing us.

Folks, God gave us free will. If He didn't, our love for Him would be meaningless. God gave us a brain and He expects us to use it. If you got an infection would you go to the doctor and get an antibiotic? If a waste basket caught fire in your home would you call the fire department or let your house burn down and say "Well, it's God's will, He must have been angry with me over something I did"?

People, your planet is overheating and you're going to do nothing except blame God. For God's sake, will you think?
