Voice of the people

Monday is last day to fight barge dock

Time is about to expire (June 30) for the Westmoreland community to voice their concerns and object to the mooring facility to be located in their neighborhood.

Westmoreland is my hometown, and I hate to think that the city and the Corps of Engineers would allow this docking facility to be located there. Anyone with common sense knows that this would affect the quality of life of those living in this beautiful neighborhood.

This should be voted down by the Corps of Engineers and never be brought up again.

Westmoreland doesn't need facility

I live in Ohio on the river, directly across from Westmoreland and where the proposed barge mooring facility could be located. We have ducks, geese, beavers, rabbits and other wildlife that will leave if the facility is allowed. Our property will devalue, and the dirt and grime from the coal dust alone makes me shudder to think about it.

Having our homes invaded by bright lights from the towboats every night and noises from the ever-clanging of barges being shuffled around day in and day out is unthinkable.

It seems to me that after losing three or four proposals for the mooring facility, the message would have gotten to the company that we do not want to co-exist with their ventures.

Are police cruisers for personal use?

Hey, what's this business with our county sheriff and state police officers driving publicly owned vehicles home from work?

There are several different law enforcers who live around me, and I see them drive home all the time, and they are always driving their police cruisers or the gas-drinking SUVs. I've even seen them putting their wives and children in the cars for family outings. Is there a liability with the insurance in that situation? With gas prices the way they are and the taxes, too, come on. I just wasn't sure how many taxpayers knew this.

Reader looks for memories of school

I can still see it as I climb the ridge at the south end of Johnstown Road. And those who turn onto West Virginia 527 from Miller Road and Pleasant Valley Drive can see it, too. That is, if they attended the little red brick school that made its home in the valley where Interstate 64 now runs east and west. It sat in the middle of a vast green meadow. Johnstown Road ran past it, almost at its door, and there was a lazy little creek on the north side of the dirt playground where we spent many a recess. We played marbles in the dust. We played ball and jacks and all the things that can be done in 15 minutes worth of free time. We developed lifelong relationships there, and our teachers taught us so many things. What a wonderful place Pleasant Valley Elementary School was. The interstate took it years ago, but my mind's eye still sees it from the hill.
