Columnist jumps to fast conclusions

Susan Estrich has discovered "Another Side to the Gun Debate" (Herald-Dispatch, Jan. 14, 2013), meaning yet another argument on the side of the anti-gun lobby. She cites the finding of "a panel of experts" that life expectancy of American males under age 50 is lower than in other rich countries, which she attributes to the fact that 67 percent of homicides in the U.S. involve the use of firearms. She also points out that, although the suicide rate in America is lower, suicides more often involve guns. From this, we conclude that younger American men would live longer, were they not killed by other men using guns.

May we not also conclude that he who is bent on killing another person or himself would find another method were guns not available? In regard to the NRA's suggestion that schools be protected by armed guards, Ms Estrich states that every "expert on school safety I could find" criticized that proposal. One must wonder how proficient Ms. Estrich is in finding school safety experts, and just how much expertise school safety professionals have when it comes to protecting school children against gun violence? Thus far, theirs is a record of failure.

Under these circumstances, I would give greater deference to the opinion of an expert on firearms. And with regard to the issue of whether school teachers, who are the children's first line of defense, should be authorized to carry firearms, I ask: How can the teachers, being unarmed, protect the children when an armed lunatic bursts into the classroom intent on mayhem?

Obama getting a pass on SS taxes

On Jan. 14 the man who was elected president threatened Social Security checks because of debt ceiling talks. How could he get a pass on saying that when people have paid a lifetime and those working now are paying Social Security taxes?

Question: What will he do with those SS taxes? Give them to whom? Why won't the media call him out on his threats and deceitful speeches? The press at one time was a government watchdog; now, they are his lapdog! I am a veteran, an Inco retiree on Social Security and STILL paying taxes!
