Government can't take your guns
Mr. Hankins just keeps on going with his irrational statements. I will try to refute a couple of these from his Jan. 18 opinion article.
He says the 1st and 2nd amendments to the U.S. Constitution are "totally unrealistic and indefensible" in 2013 and if the federal government wants to deny anyone the "right to bear guns," it can.
Well, the government cannot take our guns. The 2nd Amendment to our Constitution still protects our right to own guns. The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled the 2nd Amendment does give us this right.
Mr. Hankins says citizens who refuse to speak up for a fresh look at the Bill of Rights must bear partial responsibility if nothing is done to make our country a safer and more pleasant place to live.
I say, because a citizen does not want limitations on their owning guns, it does not mean this results in a less safe and less pleasant place to live.
Mexican citizens aren't allowed to have guns. Well, look at their drug cartel who have guns and are terrorizing and killing the defenseless citizens. The German people, under Hitler, gave up their guns and you know what a world tragedy that was.
Cars kill more people than guns in this country. Would you want to eliminate cars, limit their size, reduce speed limits on our highways to keep down car deaths.
Until the Congress and the states change the 2nd Amendment, I will keep my guns. And because of that, I resent your comment that I am selfish and must bear responsibility for the actions of other people.
