Jenkins impresses St. Joseph students
I am inspired by the words Evan Jenkins had with our student body at St. Joseph Central High School about his "Future Leaders Tour" and the importance of the youth in our region registering to vote.
I was unaware of some of the statistics he mentioned and will make sure I register to vote in the 2014 election! The youth of Cabell County really can play a part in this election.
Businesses can't pay for healthcare
Many small businesses cannot afford to provide health insurance for their employees. My business is very small and cannot take on the added expense of covering a staff of eight. With so many taxes to worry about already, the Affordable Care Act has put one more on the table: The Health Insurance Tax. It will be passed to us by way of higher healthcare premiums, but Congress must realize that small business owners and self-employed individuals cannot pay for everyone else's healthcare.
If small businesses already struggle with high costs, how will this tax make it any easier? We're running three delivery vehicles daily, and rising gas prices are hard enough to absorb. After being raised to believe it best to be my own boss, I wonder sometimes if those who went to work for the larger companies were better off. They receive full benefits that many small businesses are not able to provide.
Small businesses, including ours, are often the ones that help out in our local communities. However, this new tax will hamper those efforts. The best hope for stopping the Health Insurance Tax is for Congress to pass the Jobs and Premium Protection Act.
