Maynard makes W.Va. look foolish

Spike Maynard, chief justice of the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals, would have us believe that there’s nothing odd about his spending part of his vacation in a foreign country halfway around the world with a man who just happens to have gotten a highly favorable decision from that very same court.

A spokesman for the man in question, Don Blankenship, CEO of Massey Energy, said it was nothing more than coincidence that Blankenship and Maynard met up in Monaco for some dinner and drinks.

Right. A coincidence is when you run into someone you know at Myrtle Beach, not Monaco. Calling this a coincidence strains the credulity of even the most gullible lottery ticket buyer.

Maynard recused himself from this case only because he got caught, but managed in the process to once again hold West Virginia up to the rest of the country as something to be laughed at. Way to go there, Spike.

Felinton has right to choose medical care

This is in regard to the comments made concerning Mayor David Felinton’s decision to have his Lap-Band surgery in Ashland instead of Huntington. Health care is a very personal choice and has nothing to do with “loyalty.” I’m sure that he weighed all of his options and made his decision based on those options, and he has every right to do so. If it were you or a family member, would you not do the same?

Coal companies trample opposition

Living in the state of West Virginia truly does feel like a scene from a movie about the wild, wild west where the bad guys ride into town with the intimidating tactics of guns blazing and trampling anyone in their way.

The bad guys in this state are those who refuse to see that there is a right way and a wrong way to mine coal. The bad guys are those who would insist that mountaintop removal and the way the rest of us suffer from it is an acceptable way of life.

The bad guys are, well let’s just say it, Sen. Robert C. Byrd, Sen. Jay Rockefeller, Rep. Nick Joe Rahall, Gov. Joe Manchin and all the rest of those with the power to clean up this state and put it on the path to green jobs and renewable energy and refuse to do it.

All of those in bed with the bad guys had better stand up, shake the coal dust from their feet and move on. For the sake of your constituents and not your pockets, do the right thing. Stop aligning yourself with those who would trample the little guy in the street.

By the way, I am a registered Democrat.

Reader looks for memories of school

December 01, 2008 @ 08:20 PM

I can still see it as I climb the ridge at the south end of Johnstown Road. And those who turn onto West Virginia 527 from Miller Road and Pleasant Valley Drive can see it, too. That is, if they attended the little red brick school that made its home in the valley where Interstate 64 now runs east and west. It sat in the middle of a vast green meadow. Johnstown Road ran past it, almost at its door, and there was a lazy little creek on the north side of the dirt playground where we spent many a recess. We played marbles in the dust. We played ball and jacks and all the things that can be done in 15 minutes worth of free time. We developed lifelong relationships there, and our teachers taught us so many things. What a wonderful place Pleasant Valley Elementary School was. The interstate took it years ago, but my mind's eye still sees it from the hill.
