Obama got money form Big Oil, too

The new ad from Barack Obama stating how much money big oil gave to John McCain doesn't say that he got more than McCain. It does promise $1,000 to each person from Big Oil.

Would you people stop and think? If 300 million people each receive $1,000, this is more money than Big Oil makes in profits, which is stupid. First, if we tax more money from Big Oil, then just what do you think the price of gasoline would be?

Obama has the silly notion that if we just check the air in our tires and get tune-ups on our cars, then the oil price will substantially drop.

We are now importing around 70 percent of our oil. If the Democrats don't allow us to drill, then you can bet that in the next four to five years, we will be paying $6 to $7 a gallon. If we can't drill, convert to nuclear energy, wink power and clean coal to oil, which we should be doing now.

Your senators and congressmen want to keep us from drilling. When will you tell them to either vote for what the people want or vote them out of office?

You can check on just how much money Obama got from all oil companies and their employees. This will show you what hot air he is full of.

Proof available to show Jesus existed

Recently, there has been an attempt, although feeble, to leave the impression that Jesus Christ never existed, that He was not an actual person of history.

As E.F. Harrison wrote, "Some religions, both ancient and modern, require no historical basis, for they depend upon ideas rather than events. Christianity is not one of these."

Contrary to the assertions of a recent letter writer, the Roman historians cited as "proof" that Jesus never existed are in fact irrefutable evidence that Jesus did exist.

Admittedly, these sources (Pliny the younger, Suetonius and Tacitus, among many other sources, both Jewish and pagan) were hostile to Christ and Christianity, but their mention of Him is evidence that He did in fact exist.

If Jesus existed, such can be verified in the same manner as any other person of history. To deny His existence, based on the available evidence, is to deny the existence of historical figures such as that of Julius Caesar, George Washington, etc.

By the way, one cannot discount the New Testament documents in this discussion. They are the most attested documents of antiquity, bar none.

Space is obviously limited here. I would encourage you to investigate all of the available evidence. Jesus did exist.

Mercer has bad customer service

Remember the stories about state road workers? One working and two standing around watching? I experienced something similar at the Mercer County Courthouse. I walked into the room to pay my taxes. One woman was doing her job. One was on the phone talking shop. Another was talking shop to the woman on the phone. The woman on the phone ordered me to return to the door and wait for the only working woman to call me.

When I suggested that they all should be earning their pay, the two loafers became abusive in their language. They did, however, start asking other customers, "May I help you?"

Taxpayers pay these people's salaries. We deserve to have better service at the courthouse.

Reader looks for memories of school

December 01, 2008 @ 08:20 PM

I can still see it as I climb the ridge at the south end of Johnstown Road. And those who turn onto West Virginia 527 from Miller Road and Pleasant Valley Drive can see it, too. That is, if they attended the little red brick school that made its home in the valley where Interstate 64 now runs east and west. It sat in the middle of a vast green meadow. Johnstown Road ran past it, almost at its door, and there was a lazy little creek on the north side of the dirt playground where we spent many a recess. We played marbles in the dust. We played ball and jacks and all the things that can be done in 15 minutes worth of free time. We developed lifelong relationships there, and our teachers taught us so many things. What a wonderful place Pleasant Valley Elementary School was. The interstate took it years ago, but my mind's eye still sees it from the hill.
