Intersection at 5th and Main a hazard
I wish the traffic authorities would do something about a dangerous situation down the street from my home. The stoplight at 5th Avenue and Main Street in Guyandotte was changed to a blinking red on the Main Street side and a blinking yellow on the 5th Avenue side after the 5th Avenue bridge across the Guyandotte River was closed.
But many motorists approaching on Main Street, including some who are busy yakking on their cell phones, zoom through the intersection without stopping -- or looking -- for traffic on 5th Avenue. That's an accident waiting to happen.
They should be ticketed, or the light's original signals should be restored. I'd hate to be awakened some night by a horrendous fatal collision.

Soccer league good for Lawrence kids
Many Lawrence County families are grateful to the Lawrence County Commissioners and the ELYSA for allowing the children of Lawrence County to participate in the growing sport of youth soccer. At a time when our youth are challenged with many external influences that can be detrimental to their health and well being, ELYSA developed a league open to the children of Lawrence County from 4 to 13 years of age. In its third year, ELYSA has more than 200 children participating.
These children have an opportunity for healthy exercise and a chance to socialize and develop in an atmosphere that encourages team participation and sportsmanship. The Chesapeake school district unfortunately has few available open areas for children to congregate for sports. The school athletic fields are appropriately occupied by school-sponsored athletic events.
The Randolph family generously donated land for Little League baseball and softball. Those baseball fields are used for youth football practice in the fall.
We thank the Lawrence County commissioners for the valuable use of taxpayer-owned property at the airport and for providing a safe outlet for more than 200 children and their families.
