Little Victories needs your help

"If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men." (St. Francis of Assisi).

Caring for the lesser creatures is the most noble and rewarding work.

Little Victories Animal Rescue Group was established as a no-kill shelter about five years ago. It is a private non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. Its mission is to rescue abandoned and abused animals and provide them with a safe, clean environment where they can heal, both physically and emotionally. Ultimately, the goal for each animal is to secure a home and an adoption by people who will provide a safe, clean and healthy environment.

Little Victories has been working toward its goal for the past five years with more than 500 adoptions of both dogs and cats. It continues to rescue animals and take them to foster homes or the Little Victories farm at Ona. The animals' needs are many, not only with shelter and safety, but also with food and medical assistance. The cost of operating every day and responding to the overwhelming need is becoming an increasing burden for the overall budget and daily operating expenses.

Little Victories needs continuous support from the community. When times are difficult, as they are now, we often cut back on household spending and contributions. Little Victories is a round-the-clock operation. There is much to be done.

Please do not exclude them at this critical time. Please volunteer your time, adopt animals, become foster parents or provide monetary donations. Please call us today at 304-743-5802 to see how you can help. Or send donations to Little Victories, P. O. Box 247, Barboursville, WV 25504. Every animal we save is a little victory.

Cyrus wrong not to sign autographs

As far back as I can remember, Billy Ray Cyrus always signed autographs. At the Ragtime Club in the West End. At the Wal-Mart in Ashland, Billy Ray signed autographs for three hours.

I just heard that little Miley princess on a tour to promote her new CD refused to sign autographs, and then once again while working on her new movie, she refused to sign autographs. She was heard to say, "I'm done. Give them all pre-signed pictures."

I know she's young and needs her own personal time -- and a life -- but don't forget, if it weren't for the fans, Miss Princess, you wouldn't even have a career. Just sign any autographs that you can. The Internet pictures that I've seen -- I'm surprised Disney hasn't dropped you.

I may be wrong, but Billy Ray was always signing autographs. So Miley, just sign the autographs and stop the crying.

Reader looks for memories of school

December 01, 2008 @ 08:20 PM

I can still see it as I climb the ridge at the south end of Johnstown Road. And those who turn onto West Virginia 527 from Miller Road and Pleasant Valley Drive can see it, too. That is, if they attended the little red brick school that made its home in the valley where Interstate 64 now runs east and west. It sat in the middle of a vast green meadow. Johnstown Road ran past it, almost at its door, and there was a lazy little creek on the north side of the dirt playground where we spent many a recess. We played marbles in the dust. We played ball and jacks and all the things that can be done in 15 minutes worth of free time. We developed lifelong relationships there, and our teachers taught us so many things. What a wonderful place Pleasant Valley Elementary School was. The interstate took it years ago, but my mind's eye still sees it from the hill.
