U.S. troops overseas should come home

A report by CNN Pentagon reporter Barbara Stark on wounded soldiers being administered emergency care aboard medical transport planes flown to Germany and then to the United States is a must-see. It makes us realize what our young are going through in Afghanistan. It gives you the sense that you wish you were there with them to tell them what a brave thing they are doing, to help them to heal their wounds so they can come home to see their families, to tell them we are all waiting with open arms and hearts to thank them for the great effort and valor they have shown in a war that nobody needs or wants. They have bonded with each other like you do in combat and hate to leave their buddies behind.

If the people they are fighting for had the honor and sense to take care of themselves, we could get out now. These people have different ideas and many different tribes who have disregard for women and children. They've been in wars for at least 30 years, and nobody has ever changed them and nobody will.

There are over 500 of our sons and daughters coming home without arms, legs and eyes, and with broken bones. It takes nine hours to bring home the wounded and the critical, so families can say the last good-byes.

We must do what we can to stop this senseless war. In a sense we are destroying the families in our country by continuing to insist that this a great thing we are doing.

Our VA hospitals are doing a great job taking care of the wounded, but you can see suffering on their faces and their families. We are elated that our combat troops are coming home from Iraq, thank God.

Be kind to local folks in uniform

I find it disheartening when I think of all the times that I have seen people mock, abuse, threaten and just make harsh comments about our front-line protectors here.

Often I see people supporting our troops and showing kindness to them, and this makes me feel proud as I have a son who is a military police officer overseas. But, have you ever stopped and thanked a police officer here? On our own soil? Have you ever just waved at a fireman as they are going down the street? What about the EMS that came to your home and saved your life?

Stop and think about our protectors here and wave the next time you see them. They are the ones who keep you safe. They are the ones who risk their lives so that you don't have to risk yours. My hat is off to the men and women of the Huntington Police, Fire and EMS. Thank you for your service.
