Reporter Jack Hardin in 1984. Hardin mostly covered the police beat. Hardin's daily column started out as "About Town" by "Hardin Colfax" sometime prior to 1960 -- nobody remembers exactly when -- and every reporter threw in names from time to time. The phony byline was a play on "hard and cold facts," but most people believed it was Hardin's pseudonym. So he became its most frequent contributor, eventually inheriting it completely. He stopped writing the column in 2006.
