ORIGIN: Cabell County was created by an act of the Virginia General Assembly on Jan. 2, 1809, from part of Kanawha County. It was named in honor of William H. Cabell (1772-1853), who served as governor of Virginia from 1805 to 1808.

Wayne highlights
ORIGIN: Founded in 1842 as Trout's Hill in honor of its first settler, Abraham Trout. Incorporated as Fairview in 1882 by Circuit Court, but changed to Wayne in 1911. Named for Revolutionary War Gen. Anthony Wayne.

Wayne County highlights
ORIGIN: Wayne County was established by the state of Virginia on Jan. 18, 1842. It and 43 other counties joined to form West Virginia on June 20, 1863. It's the westernmost county in what is now the state of West Virginia, and it was named in honor of Gen. "Mad Anthony" Wayne. The general is credited with making the region safe for a white settlement, after defeating the Shawnee Indians in the Battle of Fallen Timbers.
Putnam County highlights
ORIGIN: Putnam County was formed in 1848 from Kanawha, Cabell and Mason counties. The county was named for Israel Putnam, a New England patriot, who served as a general in the Revolutionary War.
Winfield highlights
ORIGIN: Winfield is the county seat of Putnam County. It was named in honor of General Winfield Scott following the Mexican War. Winfield was established in the late 1840s but was not incorporated until 1868.

South Point highlights
ORIGIN: Most southerly point in Ohio, overlooking three states and two rivers. The community was founded in 1798 and incorporated as a village on Jan. 14, 1888.
ORIGIN: Ceredo was founded in 1857 and incorporated by an act of the Legislature passed on Feb. 22, 1866. The town was established by Eli Thayer of Massachusetts, a member of Congress, abolitionist and leader of the free-state colonization of Kansas. The philanthropist hoped to establish a manufacturing town, bring in Northern settlers and by infiltration of abolitionists, create a sentiment against the institution of slavery. The Civil War began before the town was firmly established. With the onslaught of war, Thayer's dream of a town based on equality failed.
ORIGIN: In 1834, Jacob Proctor established a general store next to the wharf, and Ohio River boat captains knew the town as "Proctor's Landing." When the town was incorporated in 1878, the name was changed to Proctorville in Jacob's honor.

Lawrence County, Ohio, highlights
ORIGIN: Named for Capt. James Lawrence, commander of the frigate Chesapeake during the war of 1812. Founded Dec. 20, 1816. Burlington was first county seat. County seat subsequently moved to Ironton.

Ironton highlights
ORIGIN: Known as center for iron ore furnaces pre- and post-Civil War and the Ironton Lawrence County Memorial Day Parade, longest, continuous running Memorial Day Parade in the nation. Founded in 1849 by ironmaster John Campbell.
ORIGIN: Named for Milton Reece, a large landowner in the area when the town was incorporated in 1876.
