Wayne High School graduates 160

WAYNE -- Wayne High School graduates were left looking to the future following their graduation ceremony at the school Thursday night.

Friends and family of the 160 Wayne graduates crammed into the small gymnasium for the 85th annual commencement ceremony. Poor weather moved the ceremony from Pioneer Field to the gymnasium.

The graduates had a lot of things on their minds as they set out to receive their diplomas. Some remembered of their high school experiences and times spent with friends, while others thought about what they were going to do next.

"I'm going to miss a lot of my friends and all the good times we've had," said graduate David Chaney. "Now I'm thinking about getting a good job."

Chaney said he's studying to be an electrician and will be taking classes at Big Sandy Community & Technical College in Pikeville, Ky. Additional training, he hopes, will aid him in his job search.

Graduate Courtney Howerton has a few years before she has to find a job. Howerton will be attending Marshall University in the fall to pursue a career in nursing.

While she's looking forward to college life, Howerton said she is going to miss the fun of high school.

"I'm in shock. I can't believe I'm graduating," Howerton said. "It's good because I'll be more independent and will be starting a new life.

"But it's bitter sweet."

The graduation ceremony for Casey Shreve was also bitter sweet.

"It's sad to know that I'm never going to be able to relive my high school memories but I'm ready for the future and to take the next step in my life," Casey Shreve said.

While she was looking forward to getting her diploma, Casey Shreve was disappointed her brother was unable to get his diploma with her.

Dustin Shreve and the rest of the Wayne baseball players were playing against Sissonville High School for a state baseball berth. Casey Shreve said her brother would have been standing in front of her to receive his diploma.

Her brother isn't far from her mind, as she wrote a message to the senior baseball players who had to miss their graduations on the top of her cap.

Following graduation, Casey Shreve will be attending Marshall in the fall. She plans pursue a degree in journalism. Casey Shreve said she was unsure where she would end up, what her major would be in a few years and what job she would get.

But she remained optimistic about her uncertain future.

"I'm sure I'll be happy with whatever I do," she said.
