Playoffs set to begin in Ohio
HUNTINGTON -- It's that time of year when high school football intensity reaches a different level.
In Ohio, it's playoff time!
This week, three area teams from the Buckeye State will look to continue their seasons while in West Virginia the final week of the regular season has some key match-ups on tap.
Here's a look at this week's top action ...
Huntington High (0-9)
at Capital (5-4)
When: 7:30 p.m., Friday
Where: Laidley Field at University of Charleston Stadium
Radio: WVHU 800-AM, WZZW 1600-AM
What to watch: Huntington High -- The Highlanders waited until the final week in each of the last two seasons to notch their first win. Can they pull the trifecta and hurt Capital's playoff push? Capital -- After a disappointing loss to Parkersburg, the Cougars need to get back in rhythm before the playoffs.
Cabell Midland (4-5)
at Hurricane (5-4)
When: 7:30 p.m., Friday
Where: Redskins Stadium
What to watch: Cabell Midland -- Michael Brumfield needs 107 yards to eclipse the 1,000-yard passing mark for the season. Hurricane -- The Redskins playoff push begins. A win and they are in, a loss and they are done.
Winfield (3-6) at
Spring Valley (8-1)
When: 7:30 p.m., Friday
Where: Wolves Den
Radio: WRVC 930-AM, 94.1-FM, WFGH 90.7-FM
What to watch: Winfield -- The Generals have traditionally been good down the stretch of the season. Spring Valley -- The Timberwolves need a win to move into the top four and potentially clinch a pair of playoff home contests.
Wayne (9-0)
at Logan (1-8)
When: 7:30 p.m., Friday
Where: Middleburg Island
What to watch: Wayne -- The Pioneers need a win to solidify the No. 1 spot throughout the postseason as they attempt a run to Wheeling. Logan -- In Wayne's last trip to Logan, the Wildcats nearly brought an end to a perfect season. Can they pull it off this time?
Highland (8-2)
at Ironton (8-2)
When: 7 p.m., Saturday
Where: Bob Lutz Field and Tanks Memorial Stadium
Radio: WIRO 1230-AM
What to watch: Highland -- The Fighting Scots' two losses were against undefeated teams. Ironton -- It is once again the year of the "9." In 1979 and 1989, Ironton won championships. In 1999, they were state runners-up. How far does this bunch of Fighting Tigers go?
Coal Grove (9-1)
at Oak Hill (10-0)
When: 7:30 p.m. Friday
Where: Davis Stadium
What to watch: Coal Grove -- The first meeting between old OVC foes since 1993, Coal Grove has owned an advantage in the series. Oak Hill -- This should be a scoreboard's worst nightmare. Coal Grove's Oakie Haynes, Boo Woods and Frank Delawder vs. Oak Hill's Jesse Slone and Western Hale.
Symmes Valley (8-2)
at Malvern (9-1)
When: 7 p.m., Saturday
Where: Malvern Stadium
What to watch: Symmes Valley -- This four-hour road trip will be the longest for any team in the Division VI playoffs. Symmes Valley is the southernmost team while Malvern is one of the northernmost in the region. Malvern -- The Hornets have scored more than 35 points in eight of 10 contests and have not been limited below 26 points all season.
