'Every second counts' at Boyd County
CANNONSBURG, Ky. -- Boyd County enters with a large chip on its shoulder.
After losing six straight games to open 2007, the Lions won five straight to make it to the district title game.
However, a controversial call and a last-second touchdown by Greenup County ended the campaign with a painful 27-26 loss.
Now, the players don't want to forget that feeling. They've put "Every Second Counts" on the back of their shirts to serve as the theme of this season.
"That pretty much leaves a ticked-off aspect coming into this year because we thought we should have gone a lot farther," quarterback Zac Wilson said. "I'm looking forward to this season because it feels like there is a new vibe for us."
Wilson is poised to lead the Lions in his senior year after several players watched their careers end with controversy. However, Wilson is also coming off of offseason shoulder surgery and missed part of the summer passing workout sessions.
The good news for Wilson and the Lions' offense is that four offensive linemen return to the fold as starters for this season. Ethan Fultz, Chris Potter, Shawn Arrowood and Rodney Opell all are back and Shane Baird will also add some experience to the mix.
"A lot of times, those guys don't get the name recognition, but they are the heart of our team," Boyd County assistant coach Brent Terry said.
Joining Wilson in the backfield will be a committee of running backs. Terry said that Lee Smith and Donnie Bryant will be called on often while Cody Wright, Cody Delaney and Kevin Stewart will also get carries.
Wilson's targets on the outside include newcomer Chase Wiler and returnees Danny Waller, Cory Moore and David Hall. Zach Green will also be a target at tight end.
On the defensive side, the linebackers are a strong point for the Lions with Bryant, the leading tackler in 2007, and Aaron Black both returning as starters. Lee Smith will also step into a starting role while Cody Rice, Seth Hatfield and Kevin Stewart add depth.
"We have six guys that can go in there and play any of the linebacker spots," Terry said.
Clearing the way for the linebackers will be Fultz, Green, Zack Messer and Brent Pinkerman along the defensive line.
The defensive backfield will feature Waller, Delaney and Moore at cornerback while Wilson, Wiler and Hall will see time at safety.
Terry said the lineup isn't outstanding at any one element of the game. Instead, they are good at all facets of the game.
"Consistency is what we give. We have experience and we aren't going to beat ourselves," Terry said. "We won't overwhelm teams with athleticism or strength, but our guys come at you play after play."
