New facilities, programs define new '09 semester
Welcome to the Spring of 2009 at Marshall University. Whether you are a new student getting a start in the second semester, a freshman coming off your first winter break or a veteran at Marshall, there are a few things you should know about the upcoming weeks.
AM I DREAMING? Here it is May 2009 and I'm FINALLY graduating. I didn't think this day would ever come. What a relief to have my degree. Now all I need is a job. Wait a minute...I don't have a resume...Do I need cover letters too?....Who can I use as references?... Can I even find a job in my field?....Where do I want to live?...WHY AM I JUST NOW ASKING MYSELF THESE QUESTIONS?
This semester, students and alumni can visit Career Services on 5th Avenue for a number of expanded services. Career Services will also host these events around campus:
For those so inclined, there are several transportation options available in the Huntington area.
Jan. 26-30 -- Step In The Name Of Love Kandy Sale to benefit St. Jude, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Student Center lobby.
With the holidays in your rearview mirror and the weather more often than not cold and gray, you might find yourself with a case of the winter blues, or maybe even full-blown depression.
Getting a case of the sniffles can be annoying when you're already trying to balance a full academic and social calendar. Getting the full-blown flu can plain old stop you in your tracks.
HUNTINGTON -- Mitchell Scott had two job offers in the field of occupational safety, but the Marshall University December graduate turned them down because they were short term and didn't come with moving expenses.
Can you pay Marshall University homage by singing the alma mater? In case you've gone through four or five years of school and still haven't picked up the words, here they are:
There's a wealth of parks and recreation in the area, including 11 parks nearby under the direction of the Greater Huntington Parks and Recreation District, a state park within 15 minutes of campus, and a wealth of activities across the river in the Wayne National Forest in Ohio, and at the many state parks in Eastern Kentucky, including Carter Caves State Resort Park in Olive Hill, Ky., where you can hike, horseback ride, canoe, fish, camp and find mild to wild caving experiences.
Whether you're looking to network within your major or make some new friends, there's a club or campus group at Marshall to meet your needs.
Leaving the relative comfort and safety of home can be challenging -- as can keeping up with school work without Mom or Dad there to nag you about it.
There are several religious organizations and clubs right on campus. There are also a variety of choices in the Huntington area. The following alphabetical list is by no means exhaustive, but attempts to provide a significant sampling of local faiths.
