MU BACK TO SCHOOL GUIDE
Big events slated this semester
All right, so you're back in your room/apartment/lean-to, and ready for another semester at Marshall.
The first thing you're going to want to do is circle two dates on the calendar.
If you don't have a calendar, write them on your arm.
The first is Feb. 14. No, not because it's Valentine's Day, but because the Tri-State will welcome one of the biggest national acts of the season.
Kid Rock will bring his friends Rev. Run from Run DMC, guitarist Dickey Betts (of The Allman Brothers Band) and vocalist Peter Wolf (front-man for the J. Geils Band) to the Big Sandy Superstore Arena for the Rock and Roll Revival Tour. Tickets are already going fast -- they're $45 general admission floor (standing room only), $39.50 reserved bleacher seating. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster locations, the arena box office, and online at www.ticketmaster.com. Charge-by-phone at (304) 523-5757.
The second date is Feb. 22, for you more cerebral types out there. That's the start of the Spring International Film Festival at the Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center, 925 4th Ave. This year's festival, which runs through Feb. 28, features "The Wind that Shakes the Barley," "The Valet," "Away from Her," "Ghosts of Cite Soleil," "The Italian" and "Ladron." The event is part of the Marshall Artists Series. For information or tickets, call (304) 696-3326.
Back on campus and back to business, there's still plenty of construction going on with the new residence halls and recreation center, along with the softball field and engineering building. Try not to wander into any areas surrounded by orange plastic mesh netting.
I'm not going to quiz you on dates, but some other important ones in the near future to keep in mind: Feb. 8 is the deadline to file an application for May graduation, and Feb. 15 is the last day to drop classes.
The next break after Martin Luther King Jr. day doesn't come until March 23, when spring break officially starts.
The residence halls actually close the day before, on Saturday, March 22. They don't open again until Sunday, March 30, and classes resume on the following Monday.
If you're not graduating in the spring, and you want to look ahead to next year, April 8 is the recommended deadline for applying for graduation in December. Also, April 14-25 are the dates for advance registration for the fall for enrolled students.
May 2 is the last day of classes, and some finals will start Saturday, May 3. Finals run through Friday, May 9, and commencement takes place the next day.
The dorms shut down at noon on Saturday, May 10.
Congratulations, you've just survived the semester. See you in the fall.
