On-campus services: Lending a helping hand

August 07, 2008 @ 12:00 AM

Leaving the relative comfort and safety of home can be challenging -- as can keeping up with school work without Mom or Dad there to nag you about it.

If you find yourself feeling overwhelmed, Marshall University offers a variety of services to help you keep your head above water -- and help you keep swimming toward graduation.

  • Counseling Center: Sometimes, it's more than just a case of the blues. Free, confidential help is available for students experiencing depression, anxiety, addiction, eating disorders, traumatic events or any other concerns. To meet with a counselor, call 304-696-3111.
  • Academic Advising Center: If you can't decide on a major, but still need to fill out a class schedule, this is where to turn for help. When it's time to register for courses, head to the Advising Center in the basement of the Community and Technical College building. Once you choose a major, you will be assigned an adviser who will guide you through until graduation. E-mail advising@marshall.edu.
  • Tutoring Services: University College offers tutoring services in a variety of subjects. Appointments may be made with individual tutors, and drop-in tutoring is also available at the center. Marshall students can get up to two free hours of individual tutoring a week per subject, for up to two subjects. Fall and spring semester tutoring hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday. For more information, call 304-696-6622 or visit www.marshall.edu/uc/TS.shtm.
  • Writing Center: Having trouble putting it into words? Students can get free, non-credit help in improving their writing skills at the English Department's Writing Center, located in Corbly Hall 353. English graduate students and undergraduate peer tutors of all majors will help you through every step of the writing process. Visit www.marshall.edu/english/writingcenter.
  • Student Support Services: The Student Support Services Program, located in Prichard Hall room 130, can help you improve your reading and learning skills and hone good study habits. You can also get counseling help for academic planning, social development and career choices. Call 304-696-3164.
  • Disabled Student Services: This program ensures that disabled students have full access to all the university has to offer. Staff will offer individualized help to both full- and part-time students with special needs, so you can enjoy all programs, services and activities on campus. The center is located in 120 Prichard Hall. Call 304-696-2271.
  • Career Services Center: Can't decide what you want to be when you grow up? Know what you want to be, but don't know how to accomplish it? The Career Services Center can help with these dilemmas and more. Get help with finding job openings, preparing your resume, writing cover letters and perfecting your interviewing skills. The center is located at Fifth Avenue and 17th Street. Call 304-696-2370.
  • Student Legal Aid: They can't help you in court, but they can guide you in understanding more about the legal process as well as university policies and procedures. The center's part-time attorneys can offer you advice and counseling on any legal matter. The office is located in suite 2W23 of the Memorial Student Center. Call 304-696-2285.
  • Student Handbook: Maintained by the MU Department of Student Affairs, there's no underestimating the value of the Marshall University Student Handbook. It puts all the important information and phone numbers at your fingertips. You can find the full text of the handbook online at www.marshall.edu/student-affairs/sections/handbook/INDEX.HTML.
