ECONOMY/FINANCE: Area builds on previous success to grow tourism
What do soccer and art have in common, or Kid Rock and Heritage Farm's quilts, or the New River Train and a romance writer's workshop, or Camden Park's Big Dipper and the Gus Macker Basketball Tournament?
HEALTH: Area hospitals renew focus on community
One theme seems to unite Tri-State medical centers in 2009 — community. Whether renovating current facilities for easier access, like St. Mary’s Medical Center moving its Infusion Center to the ground level and Cabell Huntington Hospital renovating its operating room waiting area, or just continuing the expansion of family medicine like St. Mary’s new Hurricane family medical center and Cabell’s donation to sustain the Jamie Oliver project in Huntington, projects have put the well-being of the community in the forefront.
More Progress 2
HUNTINGTON -- The Huntington YMCA is changing its focus after completing a variety of upgrades and additions last year to suit the organization's needs.

Just as diet and exercise are vital to a healthy body, budgeting, saving and cautious use of credit are the building blocks to a healthy financial life. All too often finances are neglected, and no one seems to set out on this path of financial destruction on purpose. It simply happens slowly over time. The worst thing you can do at this point is to ignore it and hope it goes away. It won't go away, and it will only get worse. If you don't think you can handle it on your own, pick up that phone and call for help! Don't be embarrassed to admit there's a problem. It will be more embarrassing later on when the debt collectors are calling you at work, you're being served a summons to appear in court, your employer has to be informed that your wages have been garnished, your car is repossessed, or your home is foreclosed on. Denial is the enemy. Waiting is the worst approach you can take.
Jones leads charge for healthier Tri-State
HUNTINGTON -- The smile on Yvonne Jones' face was a little bigger in 2010 because her patients and the Tri-State as a whole were focused on getting a little smaller.
Growth continues in Putnam County
Even with a weak economy, Putnam County continues to be one of the fastest growing counties in West Virginia. Industrial, commercial and residential growth in the county continues to outpace most of the state. Like most areas of the country, the number of new construction permits issued in all sectors is down compared to pre-2008 levels but growth continues.
MU medical students balance study with service to community
Over four years of medical school, students study the sciences basic to medicine and learn to apply that knowledge, along with clinical skill and professional attributes, in order to care for their patients. They also learn that scientific excellence alone is not sufficient for the practice of medicine: It is only when science and skill meet compassion, respect and service that they can become healers.
Red Cross makes responsibility of safe blood supply top priority
The safety of the blood supply is a responsibility that the American Red Cross takes very seriously, both for the donor and patient, and is a highly regulated, multi-step and changing process that begins with the blood donor at the door of the blood drive.
HUNTINGTON -- Dr. Harry Tweel is no stranger to the media spotlight. In the past year, he's been front and center on issues ranging from health care reform to the importance of flu shots. And, then, there's that pesky issue of the countywide smoking ban passed to prohibit smoking in bars and gambling parlors.
New surgery tactics, facilities expand offerings
HUNTINGTON -- At St. Mary's, the term "minimal" means more.
Utilizing technology to better serve its customers has helped area bank grow
BARBOURSVILLE -- Philip Vallandingham can point to his First State Bank's large secondary mortgage operation, the bank's strong ties to the community or its commitment to helping small businesses as reasons for its success.
Intermodal facility could have wide-ranging impact
The planned intermodal facility at Prichard, W.Va., has the potential for economic growth and job creation for our region. Just a two-hour drive up U.S. 23 at the Rickenbacker Airbase outside of Columbus is an example of how an intermodal facility can have a significant economic impact. This is a Norfolk Southern facility with rail to truck and airfreight carrier DHL.
St. ALBANS, W.Va. -- Loop Pharmacy and Home Medical, a locally owned business, continues to find ways to grow, even in a sluggish economy.
The Putnam County Health Department will celebrate National Public Health Week during the week of April 4-10 in a new location. Due to strong board support and a belief that the citizens of Putnam County deserve the best of care, Putnam County Health Department has recently been relocated to a spacious, convenient new office. This relocation brings exciting opportunities for enhancement of current services and future public health programs.
As president of the Chamber, I get asked all the time about area businesses and how the recession has affected them. Some sectors of the local economy have been very hard hit by the recession, others less so, and still others have found new opportunities in the present economic climate. The economy of any region is ever-changing, and the national economy is only one factor in what happens locally.
Boosting digital presence new way to reach community
As 2011 rolls on, King's Daughters Medical Center will have a bigger and better presence in the digital age.

RUSSELL, Ky. -- Updated patient outreach and a switch to electronic medical records top the list of changes going on at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in 2011, following a year that saw the opening of several new programs at the medical center.
POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. -- It's not easy to keep family and business matters separate for Lynne Fruth.
Twitter. Facebook. Interactive Web sites. They’re not just for the younger generation anymore! The American Red Cross, one of the oldest organizations in the country, has joined the online crowd to help inform and educate the public about the need for blood donations and the importance of people regularly donating blood.
The mission of the Huntington Area Development Council (HADCO) is deceptively simple — to create high value jobs in Cabell and Wayne Counties. Simple because it’s short, to the point, and unchanged since HADCO’s inception in 1992. Deceptive because of the complexities involved in navigating the ambiguities of the global economy.
The mission of the Cabell-Huntington Health Department is to promote health, prevent disease and educate the community on public health issues.
