JOB DESCRIPTION: Firefighters put their lives on the line every day fighting fires and providing emergency medical services to the community. Firefighters also provide several different types of rescue responses, from floods, to all types of natural disasters. Investigation and making sure all businesses follow the Fire Code are also a main concentration. Being a team member, educating others with fire prevention activities and staying in top physical shape all are priorities of the job.

EDUCATION NEEDED: A firefighter requires long-term on the job training.

CONTINUING EDUCATION: With their skilled training some firefighters go on to be building inspectors, departmental fire prevention consultants, investigators for fire departments and insurance companies.

PAY OPTIONS: West Virginia firefighters earn an average of $30,970 per year.

HOW TO APPLY: Firefighters can apply through the municipality where they want to work.
