JOB DESCRIPTION: These two types of social workers provide counsel and treatment for patients. Substance abuse social workers specialize in patients who have abuse problems related to drugs and alcohol. Mental health social workers help a wide range of individuals who suffer from several different mental related disorders.

EDUCATION NEEDED: Master's degree.

CONTINUING EDUCATION: Several types of training programs are available to increase the skills and experience of social workers who specialize in mental health and substance abuse.

PAY OPTIONS: The median salary is $32,000 to $35,000 per year.

HOW TO APPLY: Candidates may apply at hospitals, treatment centers, halfway houses or clinics that offer counseling for substance abuse and mental health problems. Private employment agencies also can be a resource.
