HUNTINGTON -- When it comes to progress, your home is a good jumping-off point.

While the weather may not yet be conducive for starting large-scale, outdoor projects, there are plenty of smaller jobs that make a big difference, Terry Smith, a manager at Lowe's in Barboursville, said.

During the winter and early spring, the majority of demand is for plumbing supplies, new cabinetry and lighting fixtures.

The chilled weather may also highlight the need for updating your heating, Terry said.

"Other things like simply changing your cabinet knobs and fixtures are easily done and can make a large difference in appearances," Terry said.

Once spring arrives with warmer weather, your opportunities expand significantly.

Outdoor projects like painting, landscaping and adding a deck or porch are all tasks that can be handled by the reasonably skilled amateur, without the need for hiring a contractor.

"The biggest advantages are not paying the inflated cost for the same labor and having total control over your project," Smith said.

For those interested in doing it themselves, Lowe's offers an online catalogue and instructions for commons tasks. The site also recommends products and services customers can utilize.

"Doing these things yourself is rewarding and results in a better home and lifestyle," Smith said.
