Burcham finishes 84th in national cross country race

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Jacob Burcham from Ona placed 84th Saturday in the Nike Cross Country Nationals Boys Championships.

Burcham had a 5,000-meter time of 18 minutes, 27 seconds running through the mud and slop at the Portland Meadows horse racing track. The running course with man-made obstacles such as hay bales was on the inside of the horse race track.

Runners were covered with mud after slogging around the multi-loop course.

Sam Wharton of Tipp City, Ohio, won with a time of 17:08 followed by Estevan DeLaRosa of Arcadia, Calif. (17:09) and Luis Martinez from Sue Cleveland, N.M. (17:17).

Pre-race favorite Nick Ryan from Manluis, N.Y., was 15th in 17:37.

Burcham, a Cabell Midland High School senior, qualified for the national race of 196 runners with a Southeast Region victory last week in Cary, N.C.
