Chapman tops Duke Ridgley at Guyan
HUNTINGTON -- A new name emerged Friday on the Tri-State high school golf circuit as Zach Chapman won medalist honors at the Duke Ridgley Tournament at Guyan Golf and Country Club.
The Cabell Midland sophomore shot 33-37 -- 70 to finish 1-under par and lead the Knights to the team championship of the 10-squad field at the 6,523-yard, par-71 course. Cabell Midland shot 232 as a team to finish 10 shots ahead of Huntington High. Huntington St. Joe and Cabell Midland's No. 2 team tied for third at 244.
"Third place is not bad for us in a field like this," St. Joe coach Shannon Lewis said.
Hurricane shot 249 to finish fifth followed by Coal Grove at 255, Chesapeake at 259, Huntington High No. 2 at 265, Cabell Midland No. 3 at 269 and Wayne at 301.
Chapman's victory was his first as a high schooler.
"I won a tournament in the summer," Chapman said. "This is my first during the high school season. It feels good."
Chapman was gold on the greens once he got there. He struggled a bit from the fairways, but his putting was stellar as he built an early lead and held off runner-up Josef Dransfeld from St. Joe, who shot 36-35 -- 71.
Chesapeake's Derek Lemley placed third with a 35-37 -- 72. Cabell Midland's Noah Mullens was fourth with a 38-36 -- 74. Coal Grove's Brent Morgan, who shot 71 last year to win medalist honors, shot 38-37 -- 76 to round out the five-player all-tournament team.
"It was a good day," Chapman said. "I made a lot of putts, I didn't hit a lot of good irons. My putting kept me up."
Chapman began playing golf as a sixth-grader at Milton Middle School. He said he enjoyed the strong competition he faced in the Ridgley Tournamentl, named after former The Herald-Dispatch sports columnist Duke Ridgley.
"I've played against a lot of these guys before," Chapman said. "I know they're good golfers. It was nice to play against some teams such as Coal Grove that we don't normally see."
Cabell Midland defended its Ridgley Tournament championship, having won the 2013 title by eight strokes over runner-up Huntington High. Chapman played on the Knights' junior varsity team last season.
