Wayne girls win close one

WAYNE -- Kayla Sheets drove in the winning run in the seventh inning to give Herbert Hoover a 3-2 victory over Wayne on Saturday. Hoover knocked in a run for the Huskies in the second inning.

The Pioneers scored in the fourth on an RBI double by Payton Fetty.

Herbert Hoover's Allison Rager got the win, holding the Pioneers to four hits.

KNIGHTS SWEEP: Cabell Midland beat Starmount and East Surrey in Starmount, N.C.

The Knights exploded for 13 runs in the first inning in the opener and rolled to an 18-3 victory. Jenny Brumfield had a grand slam in the contest. Abbie Tolbert went the first four innings.

In the second game, the Knights outlasted East Surrey, 9-7, with Jordan Coliflower going 4-4. Alysha Koontz smacked a three-run homer. Kyla Shull started and worked six innings.

Cabell Midland (3-0) returns to action Monday at Nitro.

ASHLAND 3, LINCOLN COUNTY 2: Ashland scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge Lincoln County at Ashland.

Lincoln County started the day with a 12-1 victory over Lawrence County. The game went just five innings.

Megan Hensley went the distance for Ashland. Brooke West did the same for the Panthers (4-2) and struck out 10. Amy Parsons drove in two runs.

In game one, Sarah Barrett went 4-for-4 with a triple, home runs and drove in three runs for Lincoln County. Brandi Isaacs knocked in two for the Panthers. Lawrence County got its only hit in the first inning.

Lincoln County returns to action Monday at Logan.
