Fairland celebrates homecoming with big win
PROCTORVILLE, Ohio -- After back-to-back punishing defeats, Fairland finally found itself on the opposite side of the score Friday on Homecoming as the Dragons ran away with a 41-6 win over visiting South Point.
Fairland, 3-3 overall and 1-0 in the Ohio Valley Conference, didn't attempt a pass until the 1:09 mark of the third quarter when Chance Short connected with Cody Midkiff for 40 yards. The nearly all exclusive ground game was in part because of a wet, sloppy and muddy field.
The ground attack was spearheaded by Fairland's top offensive threat all season, Tyree Ceaser. The gritty, tough runner busted out for 153 yards on 19 carries and found the end zone three times. He also added Homecoming King to his title during halftime.
The Dragon rushing attack wasn't just fueled by Ceasar this time as Nathan Campbell added 63 yards and Kyle Sowards powered away for 47 yards. In total they racked up 344 total yards with 304 on the ground.
Fairland was also able to overcome its own hurdles. The Dragons were called for 13 penalties and racked up a staggering 125 yards in penalties. South Point was called for 11 penalties for 75 yards.
The game was also the first time all year the Dragons found themselves with more players dressed for a game than the opponent. The Pointers only brought 23 players while Fairland had 26 in uniform. The Dragons have been outnumbered at times 2-to-1 in amount of available players during their games this season.
Fairland's scoring barrage began in the first quarter as Ceasar found the end zone for the first time from 1-yard out. After a successful onside kick recovery, Sowards ran in from five yards out. The second rushing touchdown from Ceasar with 44 seconds left in the quarter put the score at 21-0.
Following a failed fake punt attempt by the Pointers deep in their own territory, the Dragons needed just two plays to increase their lead to 28-0. This time Derrick Willis' only touch on offense resulted in a 7-yard rushing touchdown.
South Point tried yet another fake punt, this one from their own 6-yard line. Fairland took over on downs and scored on the next play, with Dylan Murphy powering through on a 6-yard carry for a 34-0 lead.
The Dragon's and Ceasar's final score came on the first play of the fourth quarter, a 2-yard run that made it 41-0.
Despite being shut down on offense for a majority of the contest, the Pointers connected for a few long plays in the air as Josh Browning hauled in four passes for 101 yards and Mason White had two receptions for 45 yards. White caught a 25-yard touchdown reception from Austin Majher in the final four minutes.
Fairland's defense forced three turnovers, including two interceptions and a fumble.
South Point (0-6, 0-1) gained just 181 yards of offense with only 35 on the ground.
