SISTERSVILLE -- Point Pleasant's softball team is heading to the state tournament at Jackson Park in Vienna after Tessa Wyant threw her second straight no-hitter to blank Magnolia 5-0 in the Class AA, Region I final at Kidwell on Thursday evening.

The game was one of few to complete on Wednesday, particularly because Wyant mowed through the order of the Blue Eagles. She struck out 17 batters by using her change-up and getting ahead of hitters consistently.

Magnolia, which ends its season at 19-11, did not hit a ball in play until the fifth inning as Wyant fanned 11 of the first 13 batters of the game.

The game went scoreless through three innings, but Point Pleasant opened the game up in the fourth inning. Anna Sommer scored the game's first run when Magnolia committed three errors on one play.

Sommer hit a fly ball to right field and advanced all the way home following a pair of throwing errors to give the Big Blacks the only run that Wyant would need.

That meant nothing to Wyant, who crushed a deep home run to left-center field just two pitches later to give herself some more cushion.

Point Pleasant (29-6) kept the pressure on in the fifth inning when the offense connected for three hits and got an additional pair of runs when a liner to left field was dropped, scoring two more runs. The Big Blacks added another run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning to end the scoring.

Now, it's on to Jackson Park for Point Pleasant, which will await the winner of the Class AA, Region III championship between Shady Spring and Wyoming East that was suspended on Thursday.

Shady Spring led that contest 4-0 in the top of the fifth when play was halted and no updates were available as of press time.

Point Pleasant will be looking for its first state title since 1998 when the Big Blacks won the Class AAA crown.
