Parkersburg earns top athletic program honors in MSAC
HUNTINGTON -- Parkersburg High School won the 2012-13 Mountain State Athletic Conference race for having the best overall athletic program.
Schools earned points for their finish in each of the 19 MSAC-sponsored boys and girls sports.
Points were earned on a basis of 16 for first place in the league, 14 for second, 13 for third, and so on down to one point for 15th place. Schools received no points for not having a participating team.
Parkersburg accumulated 225 points to edge George Washington (221) and Hurricane (218.5).
Huntington High finished fourth with 204.5 points, Cabell Midland was fifth with 194, Winfield placed sixth with 187.5 and Spring Valley tied for eighth with 119.5.
The Parkersburg Big Reds captured MSAC titles in volleyball and boys track.
Hurricane claimed league titles in girls cross country, boys soccer and cheerleading. Winfield won the girls track title.
Huntington High's league titles were in wrestling, girls basketball and girls tennis.
Cabell Midland finished on top in football, boys cross country and baseball.
The other MSAC titles went to George Washington (girls and boys swimming, boys tennis); Woodrow Wilson (boys basketball); and Princeton (girls soccer).
