Pointers come up short against Wheelersburg

August 30, 2008 @ 08:23 AM

SOUTH POINT, Ohio — South Point gave a top-notch Wheelersburg squad everything it could handle and more for four quarters Friday night, before committing a few costly errors and allowing the Pirates to escape with a 28-20 win.

Wheelersburg came straight at South Point with a grueling ground attack, but the Pointers answered with a balanced run game of their own. Both teams combined for 633 rushing yards with each team going over 300 yards.

The turning point of the game came early in the second half when Ryan Plants scored a touchdown to tie the game at 20-20. However, the touchdown was called back and South Point turned the ball over on downs at the 12-yard line.

Quarterback Brandon Schankweiler proceeded to take run the ball 88 yards on the next play for a back breaking score that gave Wheelersburg a 28-14 lead. This shifted the momentum and turned South Point’s focus toward catching up instead of taking control.

“We had some opportunities tonight and our kids didn’t capitalize on them,” South Point coach Doug Shilot said. “Our kids played their hearts out, but we just made too many mistakes and came up a little short.”

Doug Dillon led South Point’s smothering rushing game with 127 yards on 16 carries. Jacob Seagraves was also sharp on his feet with 86 yards on 13 carries.

For Wheelersburg it was the Schankweiler show that led them to victory. Brothers Jordan and Brandon Schankweiler lit up the ground attack for a combined 293 yards on 24 carries. The Schankweilers scored all four touchdowns and a two point conversion to carry the Pirates to the win.

Wheelersburg looked to cruise in the early going jumping out to a 14-0 lead. But the game was far from over, as South Point’s offense was just getting its engine revved up.

Ryan Plants caught a 35-yard touchdown pass from Jacob Seagraves in one of the few passes of the game. Both teams passed the ball only five times each.

After a 45-yard touchdown run by Brandon Schankweiler, South Point answered again with an 8-yard score by Plants. South Point’s offense couldn’t be stopped, but the Pointers couldn’t stop Wheelersburg either.

With Wheelersburg leading 28-20 and 3:11 remaining on the clock, South Point was driving for the game-tying score. But Seagraves fumbled on the Pirates 28-yard line, stalling the drive and sealing the Pointers’ fate.

The fumble and holding penalty were two miscues that decided the outcome of the game and will haunt South Point for the rest of the week.
